Hi John , I`m new to scenery game but for my next dio I`m using mdf some stained quadrant to go round the base , maybe foam , pva , tile adhesive (will let dry thoroughly because it will crack), polly filler, then modelling clay to pick out details then the normal modelling weathering stuff , I may be wrong doing it this way John but seeing I`ve got all the materials I`m going to give it a try,

Hope this gives you an insight of the stuff you could use , I`m sure if there are any flaws in my ideas the guys will let us know , I`m still learning like you mate ,

One more thing John , take your time let things dry properly and if your not in the mood leave it well alone , its taken me nearly 2 weeks to put a fence up on my present dio.

if you have the modelling bug all the time why not have a couple of dio projects going at the same time so you always have something to work on.

Hi John, you could try making a frame from anything like old lolly sticks or even chicken wire (might be too big though) then cover that with paper machie. When it's dry, add a little plaster or polyfilla for the cliff face. I'd varnish that board before you do anything though or it might warp once water hits it which will spoil your hard work.

When I did a train set years ago for my son I made a big set of cliffs out of Paper maiche I held it up with chicken mesh to start but when it set it was pretty sturdy, I used rubberized horse hair for trees and hedges its very cheap and you can cut and bend it then paint it with PVA and sprinkle it with the green scenery "Stuff" not sure how "Pro" it would look close to on a diorama but it was good enough for the train set.

How to make a paper mache diorama

not sure that the whole sire is relevant but it shoes the principles of paper mache (I will spell it right in a minute)

John, how about polystyrene blocks? The size T.V.s are packed in......nice and quick to do, light and you can tear bits off to give a nice 'cliff' feel to the stuff.
