    Horsepower

As I trawl the net I obviously come across images which ,whilst strictly outside my sphere of interest, are interesting enough to save. It is well known that horse power (literally) played an important part in powering the Wermacht. I post these for your delectation along with a query. Do any of you dioramists ever do anything featuring horses? Are suitable scale beasts even available?

The last one would make a great diorama, way beyond my ability, have you seen one of my pilots?

    Enjoy

I was always disappointed that the German Field Kitchen which was horse drawn didn't come with horses. Lovely Tamiya 1/35 kit though..... I will have to get one. There is a kit of a mounted soldier with a standing figure that Tamiya do, not sure if they would be the right sort of horses to go with the kitchen. Would look good with the kitchen set up and a couple of horses tethered to one side.

I'm pretty sure they are as I remember seeing a dio of Tamiya's field kitchen being pulled through a snowy field by horses in Fine Scale Modeller magazine. Patrick

Graham, with reference to the Tamiya mounted German soldier + a standing figure, I was going to have a bash at this, but just take a look at the made up kit on Netmerchants site. The horse's mane is awful....or is it me?

A plastic moulded mane is always going to be tricky but making one out of hair??? maybe even tricker. I think the idea would be to paint it in such a way as not to make it stand out much. Also added texture could be created by judicious use of a hot pin to 'fluff it up a bit'

To be honest, I have seen much worse lol. If I was to do it I would not dry brush the mane like they have, I would just use inks to get the shadow. A chestnut horse like that would not have a grey highlighted mane. It would more than likely be quite dark. I am sure that where possible these horses were well cared for, until they got eaten, but I doubt they would have been as 'polished' as a civilian or parade horse. I think it is worth a bash.

              Hi Graham,

There is a version of the Tamiya field kitchen which includes two horses. Someone also does/did a couple of kits which make up a horse-drawn convoy. I think there's a couple of general purpose wagons, an ambulance wagon, horses and figures; and it's in the back of my mind that it was done by ESCI although I may be wrong.

Don't know whether this helps but I've seen all of these on ebay at one time or another, and I bought the Tamiya kit.

              Gern

PS If it's just horses you're after, I also seem to remember that Preiser do some farm animal kits which are sure to include horses.

              Edit:

I'll try again - I just lost the post I was writing!

I've had a look through Tamiya's catalogue and can't find the 'Gulaschkanone'. This was the field kitchen with horses and it looks like they've stopped making it unfortunately.

It was ESCI who made the other kits I mentioned. There's an ambulance kit on ebay at the moment:

              http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE!-ESCI-1%2F35-HORSE-DRAWN-MEDICAL-WAGON_W0QQitemZ160393599643QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20 100110?IMSfp=TL100110232001r37607

When Italeri took over ESCI, they released quite a few of their kits. One of these was a version of the original horse drawn convoy I mentioned. Here's a link to a review:

              http://www.ipmsusa2.org/Reviews/Kits/Misc/Italeri_35_Horse_Convoy/Italeri_35_Horse_Convoy.htm

              Maybe Italeri still issue this?

              Hope this is useful

Interesting Gern. I have not been able to find the kitchen with horses, although I have just ordered the one without. I will have a look for the ESCI ones, they sound very interesting. Setting myself for a fall here as I have no idea how I will paint the horses. I have done war-game horses, hundreds of Nepolionic cavalry but they don't need to look as good as these will. Thanks for the info.

Also ordered the mounted soldier. Hope Ron gets one so he can teach me how it should be done. It can even have a bucket for the droppings Ron :emo12:

hi guys, thought i might chuck my two penneth in, when i was a nipper i remember reading in the airfix magazine about a firm called historex who made figures etc and more importantly horses. So,ive just googled it and theyre still going, you can get a set of 5 horses in different poses and i think you have to make them up,a bit like a normal figure ,so you could have them any way you want.Theyre about £14 for the set of five and in 54mm scale which isnt far off 1/35 i think(?) Im not that good with computers to be able to put on a link so youll have to google it yourself, just put in historex and have a good trawl through. hope this helps ,cheers tony

Thanks for the info Gern. After searching around a bit I have found this which also looks interesting

                      Italeri 1/35 Horse Drawn Breda 20/65 mod. 35 w/ crew # 6464

Also this which would be good for diorama building

                      Italeri 1/35 Field Tool Shop # 419

                      And this

                      Tamiya 1/35 Livestock Set # 35128

I placed my second order with Model Hobbies late last night and I have an email today saying it has been dispatched. Looks like I will be placing another order quite soon lol. now to find that horse drawn convoy..... Thanks again Gern, you are going to cost me a fortune lol

If it's any consolation Graham, the ESCI ambulance comes with it's own bucket so you'll not need to spend extra to satisfy the entry requirements for armour in this forum!!
