    A good (almost) day

Those who take the time to read my posts, and may I take this opportunity to thank you all... you will be aware of my total frustration in finding paints as I have to order them online and I keep ordering what I think is right only to find it is nothing like I thought when it arrives. Well, a friend at work was talking to me the other day about when he used to do railway layouts. I pointed out that he would be unable to do it easily now as there were no model shops in Peterborough. He gave me one of those 'poor sap' looks and gave me the address of a 'small' railway shop on an industrial estate just a few minutes from the city centre.

Well, to make a short story long again, I called in this afternoon while on our weekly pilgrimage to the Temple of all things we like, that is ASDA. This 'small' railway place turns out to be a huge place full of railway loveliness. More importantly, the first thing I saw as I walked in was a huge stand of Humbrol Acrylics and Enamels and all other bits like glue, varnish, thinners etc. I was in multi colour heaven.

Reeling from this heady excitement I turned to come face to face with what is probably every Airfix kit made (other than the 1/48 TSR2) The 1/24 Mossie was there for £130 in a box slightly bigger than a suitcase. Bouncing away from that to catch my breath, I came across a couple of shelves with assorted Trumpeter , Dragon and Italeri kits. from these shelves came the plaintive cry of an Italeri Kubelwagen in 1/35 for £5.95. Buy me, it cried, so I did and a few paints, scenic ground type stuff and a promise to be back. OK, it isn't a great 'model' shop but at least I can now say that I have a Local Model Shop.

Ironically, on our way home with a boot full of food we don't need, we passed the sign for a new garden centre that opens soon. On the sign were the words 'Hobbycraft opening Feb' I must have been a really good boy last year as my dreams are coming true. Just hope the Hobbycraft will do modelling, mainly as some branches do a decent range of paints. There is no way I will be able to afford their kit prices.

The other thing that was in the Railway place was an airbrush kit from EXPO. It is a box type compressor but does have an air tank inside the box style case, anyone know if it is any good? Sorry I didn't get the model number but I would think it is their basic one.

Seems you had a great day Graham, not like mine. I was cleaning strange glue like goop out of my airbrush due to some wierd reaction for half the day. It's great that you have found a half decent local model shop in your area. I'm pretty lucky in that there are four shops local to me, but that has it's dissadvantages, well it does for my wallet! Oh, to have the money for that Mossie eh?? As for the airbrush, is it this one? Expo Airbrush and Compressor Deal (AB602) | Antics Online wouldn't know what it's like however looks like a good starter set with a dual action gravity feed brush but don't know much about the compressor... though there are cheaper imported kits on the bay of fleas for around £65 -£100 with two airbrushes, with or without tanks, but make sure it includes an inline water trap if your working in the shed... COMPLETE AIRBRUSH KIT + AIRBRUSH COMPRESSOR WITH TANK on eBay (end time 17-Jan-10 06:39:43 GMT) AIRBRUSH IN-LINE MOISTURE TRAP - FITS AB-SERIES & IWATA on eBay (end time 26-Jan-10 21:27:45 GMT)

Hope this helps out as well, Map of Model shops in Peterborough » Yell.com

    take care,

    Chris

Always nice when you discover an aladdins cave of modelling delights Graham! There's nothing like seeing it laid out for you, something that online shopping just can't compare with! I don't know anything about the EXPO set-up but I'll bet someone does! Patrick

yes its always a good idea to patronize your local model shop as modelling believe it or not is not big buisness and neat little model shops run on a shoe string and need all the patronige they can get .Thats why they come and go so frequently .Its always nice to have somewhere to go and actaully have hands on the stuff instead of just blindly using the tinternet just cos its easy.PLus the fact if you go there often enough the owner may be is in a position to give a bigger discount.

hi graham, things are looking up eh? great to see youve found a nice local shop ,sounds good, and 5.95 for the kubelwagen?! bargain! You should be ok with the hobbycraft store too, they were recently quoted as saying that they were going to do more for the modeller, and they usually have allsorts of paints etc. although like you say the prices are always top dollar. cheers tony
