    Prizes at modeling contests

    Hi,

I try to collect as many information as possible about customs in different countries as far as organizing modeling competition is concerned. I’m interested in prizes for winners. What do you think, is it in a good taste to give winners prizes such as computers or other material things, for example? Or winner’s cups, ribbons, certificates and plaquettes are the only forms to prize them because most modelers take part in such competition only for having good fun and for prestige?

    Hi Salinan

That's a hard question. I think no matter what country, the prize awarded can depend from country to country and competition to competition. Tropheys are generally nice as a symbol of pride to be on display and like you said modellers take part in such competitions for fun so any metal-wear is fantastic. Some competitions my dad used to do for his O Gauge trains, he would win a small trophy as well as some useful items like a small kit, set of paints or something.

    Cheers

      Hi Salinan

That's a really good question! While I am new to modelling and don't know how prizes are chosen in competitions, I have taken part in league competitions where prizes were awarded.

The league I was in allocated relatively large sums of money for trophies, cups, medals, shields etc. The situation became rather ludicrous when absolutely everyone in the league got a trophy just for being a member of the league and turning up for matches! If trophies are so commonly given, then they become worthless. That spoils it for achievers who deserve to receive something meaningful for their efforts. So I believe trophies etc should only be given as recognition for achievement - not for participation.

The idea of cash/goods (instead of trophies) as prizes also has some problems. We can all use extra goodies, but what do you point to a few years down the line and say "I won that for ...."?

I suppose it all boils down to why the individual contestants have entered the competition: For prestige? For the sheer enjoyment of the competition? For some material reward? For recognition?

I guess that any competition will have some of each type of contestant, so whatever you do you could end up with some dissatisfied winners!

Gift certificats are normally well recieved. Then the winner can choose the prise them selvs. A form of sponsorship from a larger shop or the like. Stick to model shops though.

I'd rather win a model shop gift certificate for 50 quid than a PC for 500!
