    Oil paints....

Hi everyone, I decided to add some much needed weathering to an existing build I completed last week, an LCM III 1/72, I've read loads of articles about using oil paints for weathering effects, could you give me some advice how to use oils correctly & anyother ways I can add weathering to my model??? I've used the dry brushing method & has worked pretty well so far.

Hi Ben, there are a number of ways to use oils to weather models-in fact so many that I'll never think of all of them! The first would using oils in place of enamels for washes. I've found this gives more choice in what colours to use, eg a raw sienna wash will give a nice rusted look plus it gives a better finish than enamels & you can manipulate it for longer because oils take longer to dry. There's also the 'dot' technique where you literally dot raw oil paint on the model, then using a brush loaded with thinner, run the brush down the sides of the model until the paint is almost gone, this changes the base colour in a subtle way & is very effective with single-colour vehicles (OD Sherman's for instance) so you get different tones across the model. You can also add streaks & rainmarks with oils. I've used these ideas when painting my T-34 so you could check out that thread or there are a few vids on You Tube that show how it's done. Hope that helps Patrick

Hope you don't mind Patrick, i'll post these vid's up. They have helped me out in the past but, the last video is the first time i've seen it and looks good. Clay based washs, never heard of them until today

This looks good, may have a go.

That's cool John, I would have myself but didn't have time this morning. As for the Promodellers wash, that's what Steve uses & having seen that same vid, I've ordered some to see what it's like. I'll keep you posted with the £9 Sherman I've just bought! Patrick
