tricky Q

Hello everyone I've been MIA on here for a bit. I'm still plugging away on my P-47 Razorback almost done. My main question is for all you UK guys, My grandpa was a Canadian voulintier Firefighter and my father came accross some old photos of him on in particular is one where he is standing in front of a pumper. I came accross an Italiari kit 3.5 ton 1/24 scale pumper which is verry similar in shape but they depict it in red and black fenders. Did they have them painted in red durring war time or were they in green? Ill get furter details if you need to know where he was posted to know if they were red or green in the area.

    Thanks a bunch,

    James

As far as I'm aware the fire engines of the various civilian fire brigades were,as indeed they still are, painted red. I can't imagine why they would have been repainted. Of course there may have been some civil defence orders from some ministry I've never heard of.

I asked my aunt and she was certain that the fire engines in Oxfordshire remained in their original i.e. red colour.

My aunt is pretty chipper but eyewitness reports can be unreliable!

      Cheers

      Steve

PS I guess for fire engine you should read fire truck lol!

Edit: My uncle called to say that my aunt needs her eyes tested and that he remembers grey fire engines during the war. Sorry to have been so confusing.

Well thats just it, the photo is black and white (duh) but it really dos'nt look like red. if i can say that without sounding dumb. it looks too light greyish for being a red truck. as for which one, its the truck not the jeep. i was thinking of doing the truck up then making a figeur to reresent my grandpa then puting the photo in behind as a ref. kind of trubute deal. (P.S. if you guys know where to get a 1/24 fig. much better) He never talked about the war and i'm struggling to get information, for none of my aunts an uncles know much besause he never spoke about it. My dad has been spearheading it really he managed to get original meadls from the Canadian gov't that were issued to him. so we are kind of putting a wall up for him so to speak.

        Thanks again,

        James

          Hi James,

I've seen sets of 1/24 firefighting figures made by Revell (obviously to go with one or more of their fire trucks) on ebay a few times. I seem to remember there's about six figures including some sort of fire chief. I'm not sure if they're still being made or what nationality/era they're supposed to be.

I've also seen several sets of figures in 1/24 although these are mechanics/drivers etc to go with trucks and cars. Not much I'm afraid but you might find something you could use or adapt .......

Steve i think your uncle is thinking of these trucks from the NFS. The one in the picture is diffrent from that its ladders are on the out side of the truck. Thank you Gern i thin ill try to modify one to suit the photo. Ill get around to scaning it some time soon.

so my father dropped off the photo today and all my looking paid off! BUT the kit i was thinking of is not any where close! the truck he is standing in front of is a N.F.S. 1943 Dodge 82A Mobile dam unit. and the truck is GREY so Steve your uncle was bang on. I'm going to scan the photo at work tomorrow and post it. So here is my thoughts.... can the kit be turned into a Dodge 82A? I think i can figure out a way to fudge it. the cab and wheels frame are very similar. as well as fenders a little bit of work and the chassis will look the same. Omit the tank keep the ladders that come with the kit and scratch build a box in the back i need more photos for that if any one can point me in the right direction on that ill be really happy. my photo is from the right side of the truck and it looks like the big square on the back is a bench seat.

              Thank's again,

              James

I'm afraid I'm not much help with fire engines but just wanted to say what a great project,I'm sure you'll figure it out. In the interests of my aunt and uncle's marital harmony (after 55 years!) I quietly let my uncle know that his memory was just fine.

Your grand dad cuts quite a dashing figure there, I'm guessing that the rather rakish beret on the back of the head is a canadian "style". I tried that sort of thing as a young cadet with predictable results LOL.

                  Cheers

                  Steve

The 1/24 Dodge is chalk and cheese compared to the Dodge 82a - there is a 1/76 model available of the Dodge 82a MDU, available here, as well as other NFS fire engines B. W. MODELS | CEV1 - CEV25 photos - scroll down to CEV14, Dodge Mobile Dam Unit
