    going dark for a while

Due to the fact that the motherboard on my laptop has decided to go tits up, I am without a PC.

So I might be away a lot in the evenings.

Work days not so unlucky., If that blows up I get a new one in 15 mins.

HP want mine for 14 days.

I'm a bit pived, as this is the second MB its eaten. The first one was under GT. Not so sure I'll be so lucky this time!!!

Question: Why do PC's always go down before you make a back up?

It can be a pain and shows that even outside work, we have become so dependent on these computer things. I had a laptop hard drive fail a few years ago and lost all my digital pictures. It was a horrible feeling that I vowed I would never go through again. My current iMac is attached to an external HD and Apple's Time Machine does incremental backups every couple of hours. I realise that this is the minimum security but, to be honest, I don't have that much of importance to back up any more. See you at the other side of the moon.

        Right then.

After talking to the nice lady at HP I was told that as the GT has run out, I would have to pay for the repair.

Drive the 30km to the repair center and have a chat with the guy behind the counter.

"What does it do"? he asks.

        "nothing, its dead" I reply.

"OK" he continues; "what happend when it died"?

I explain: "shut the top down when I went to bed Wednesday, went to work Thursday, came home opened the top to bring it out of its sleep and nothing happend. Turned it off, and made a cup of tea. Came in turned it on and all the lights in the key board lit up, the screen was totally blank, on life in it at all. Then after about a minet, it shut down and tried to stat up again. This repeated its self about ten times. In the end I gave up".

I took the lap top out and asked, "would you like to see what it does"?

he said yes lets. So I open the top press the power button and the sodding thing started up with out so much as a thought! Bloody typical.

In fairness he did offer to take it in and have a look. I just had to pay £70 first, then the cost of any parts and labour. However the £70 would be deducted from the final bill!!!

I think about it and decline. The darn thing works.

Came home got the thing out and guess what....

The ruddy thing did it again.

Fortunatly, after having stuck a few bits on the mossy, it started up no problems!!

        Typical.

That and when your car has a funny noise that has been driving you nuts for ages. Then you book it into the garage only for the noise to disapear and you looking a complete numpty.I think it is technology telling us it can do what the hell it wants when it wants.

Well it started today with out problems. The dude in the service shop did say it might just be a faulty switch or something. We'll see what happens. One thing is for sure. If my lap top does indeed require large amounts of money to repair at a later date, I think I'll just by a desk top and start again!

Whilst talking about techno revenge: Last week, friday 21:00 the cable signal in the whole town went out. NO Internet, No TV and No telephones. Isn't it wonderfull that they can stuff all that down one cable. Just total c#¤p when the cable goes. Any way we have a telephone number you can ring to to report things like this. So grab mobil, ring them up to report the fault. Recorded message: You have called out side our normal opening times. You can ring to us and report faults between 08:00 and 18:00 monday to friday. Saturday between 12:00 and 20:00!

AND that was a number dedicated to reporting faults!!!

As it turned out it was not the providers fault. The power company's system that powers the whole net work for the town blew up and they needed to replace everything. When did we get service again? 22:00 saturday evening!

Dont ya just gotta love technology!

Again, it shows how dependant we have become on computers and the internet. Thankfully, NTL now Virgin provide a superb service to the point where we take it for granted. The very few times it doesn't work make me feel the same as I did when I quit smoking. Sad really.
