aircraft model kits with folding wings

Hi all, does anyone know of any kits that have folding wings. I saw one once at a model show but I'm blowed if I can remember what it was. I seam to remember it was british and had something to do with the coast gaurd, maybe.

I would also like to build one. Also if possible I would like some tips on how I can make the wheels retract on planes as I sure some kits use to do this when I built them as a kid, many years ago I know before one of you say.

Quite a few of the Navy aircraft have them. Some kits allow you to model them as folded but I believe that there is third party detailing stuff available for some of them. Might be worth looking for the detailing packs before you decide on a kit as it would make it much more realistic assuming the kit isn't detailed enough.

      Hi Col,

I've got the Trumpeter 1/32 F4U-4 Corsair which uses rods and PE to create a folding wing mechanism. I've not built it but it looks a bit fragile. It's also got a working retractable tail wheel but the Gods alone know why 'cos the main wheels have to be fixed in place - either down or up!

One of them is Tamiya 1/48 F4U 1D with Moto-tug. Saw it displayed at a showroom with wings folded

IIRC the Royal Navy used folding wings on their buckeniers aswell, this could be interesting diorama for a ship deck.

Thanks for all the information keep it coming everyone, the plane i was thinking about was the fairy gannet, which was a classic airframe kit, only this is a rare kit and very expensive so i will definitly have a rethink.

Have a look for a Hobbyboss TBF-1 as Eduards do a kit for it.
