I may be wrong on this, I usually am, but I believe that the tools on armoured vehicles were sprayed the same colour as the vehicle when shipping. It would then get the normal wear and tear as a garden spade so anything from very dark gun metal, near black to rusty with maybe a silver edge. Probably worth looking at your garden spade, mine is no good as it is stainless steel and looks like chrome....

I would agree that a dark gun metal is a good place to start, along with some weathering in the form of a silver edging, and scuffs.

hi alexander, im probably not the best person to be offering advice as im mainly an aircraft man,but ive done a couple of armour subjects and i did the shovels in citadel miniatures(warhammer) paints boltgun metal, which is as it suggests a darkish gunmetal colour ,then a dark wash or sandy pastel dust on top. hope this is of some use , cheers tony

I agree gunmetal and along with martin I would dry brush it with a silver to highlight any edges

In the magazines that make a really nice dark cold metal colour like graphite for tools and wear and tear. You know the dark metal colour you see of tanks and on all metal odject when they start to wear. whats that colour?

I paint mine with a base coat of black then dry brush with gun metal then highlight the edges in aluminium for the handels i use red brownthen paint the handel over with burnt umber oil paint and use a cotton bud to remove the oil paint right away this leaves a wood grain. I hope this is useful.

I use Vellajo's oily steel with a touch of black mixed in and that works ok

Alex from my readings, on the Tiger 1 and presumably other German armour, the wire cutters and long podge bar were all metal, likewise the small spade behind the wooden jacking block.

The axe, sledge hammer and large shovel had wooden shafts......unless someone knows different, as Ester Rantzen would have said!!lol

I've had a look at the 1/35 plastic versions of the tools and the above seems to be correct.

This is all great stuff i'm going to try it all out. I like the oliy steel and the technic for painting the handles
