Almost brought a tear to my eye.

Got home from work and despite the awful weather, as there was a break in the rain my 2 year old daughter wanted to play in the garden so I obliged by going outside with her. No sooner had we gone outside we heard the familiar roar of a merlin engine (as it gets closer to airshow season the airworthies at IWM Duxford are in the air prepping) and a spit roared up in to low level cloud. My little angel shouted 'daddy airplane' to which I responded 'yes honey that's a Spitfire' to which she have a slightly perplexed look, just then it roared back over so picked her up for a better view and broke the name down into syllables Spit-fire to which she responded 'Spit-fire'.......my heart melted.

    Regards to all

isnt it great that we have so many dedicated people who work so hard to preserve these planes so that young people like your daughter Chris can see them in flight. Lets hope they are around for many more generations to enjoy.

I havent been to Duxford for a few years now but the last time I was there I was just about to go nto the armour section when I heard the sound of a Merlin engine. I looked up expecting to see a Spitfire but was greeted by the sight of a P51-D Mustang practicing for air show season. I watched it for a while and it went into a short power dive, engine screaming. It was disconcerting enough on its own without having one shoot at you as well. It must have been terrifying being on the wrong end! But what a sight and what a sound.

It seems I don't live far from you .. I'm in Dunmow near Stansted and am treated quite often to Merlin engined aircraft passing over and, more lately, loads of Apache gun ships on virtually a daily basis too. Oh I love it !
