1:16 Tiger Part Work

Here we go again, the Victory has been built and the new part work for us modellers is a 1:16 Tiger. Not an RC but it has Zim moulded on, it has basic interior and metal link tracks. It appears that it is made from part metal and part ABS plastic. You get a pot of dark yellow and a pot of ivory for the inside.

Once again, it will take ages and cost a fortune at £4.99 per week, could end up at £700. But, and I know it will get slated on cost, a lot of people have £4.99 per week but not the £399 to buy a Tamiya.

Anyone seen the advert on TV yet? Part one is 50p and has the three piece gun barrel on the cover.

I was going to get this but the wife beat me to it, she came in with it yesterday. So i looks like i've have a nice regiment going when it's done. I have got two issue's of part one though, the muzzle brake fits the Heng Long Tiger with a little work. The only question now is "who's tank will we be building, Wittmann anyone?"

Not subscribing Graham (we know the newsagents) but, yes i'm having this one. From what i've seen on the build up DVD the tracks are the Tamiya metal upgrade at £99, Kenny Kong metal track set for Tamiya Tiger 1 Late version tracks 1 16 scale these look like the ones.

What i'm going to do is build the static model up but, when the parts come out like the tools/tracks/mud guards i'll phone up to get back issues and upgrade my new RC Heng Long Tiger. I know it's cheeky getting parts cheap but they fit and i've already fitted the muzzle brake from part one lol.

Seen the ad and its just unbelievable. As Graham states it works out to very nearly £700...its in FORTY NINE ISSUES !!!!!

As i previously worked in a newsagents i know how these things operate, you will get to around part 20-25 if your really lucky...then guess what....you wont be able to get the rest, they will shelve it ...why becaus ethe very vast majority of people will give up on it, so its cheaper for them to stop the publication....then about a year or two after they stop it will become available again, but from isuue one again, this is in the hope they can regain some interest.

We use to get soooooo much grief from customers as to why they could no longer get these "collectables" but it was not us that stopped them it was the producer of the mag...it happened with EVERY COLLECTABLE MAGAZINE. There are loads of em from gem stones to dvd colections to knitting to food recipies......i would strongly urge people to seriously think before investing your hard earnt cash....i can guarentee you will have a half built and very expensive model, regards Martin :-)

How do Martin, for the past two years i've been collecting the "Combat Tanks Collection" with no problems. And before that "Star Trek The Next Generation and the Original Series" on DVD not one missing and didn't subscribe to any, yes i know the paper shops only get the first five issues of a publication to see how it goe's.

Martin does have a very valid point, this did indeed happen frequently in the past but it seemed to be a DeAgostini trait, most of the build this "insert title here" mags were in fact DeAgostini, I recall my dad some years ago collecting something, (i forget which, he was always collecting one thing or another), and just over halfway through it was cancelled, no explanation, nothing, newsagents will work on a stock and sell basis for anything on sale or return but will naturally be wary of a non return item, (can you blame them at a retail of £4.99)

On another note, i'm watching Goldeneye as i'm typing this and it's right at the fantastic tank chase scene through Moscow.

For anyone who's collected something similar before, are the magazine actually worthwhile, do they contain enough info to keep you interested ovetr 41 issues?

I ask as i've subscribed to various mags in the past, Motorbike, Photograhy etc and find that after about 10 issues they essentially ust start repeating themselves.

OK, for anyone thinking on it.

I picked up the first today, (mainly as it was 50p and I was curious, never been into armour particularly but thought it might be worth a shot)

I won't be bothering for one particular reason but there are a few things to consider.

A previous post states it's in 49 issues

It is in fact 140, (yes one hundred and forty), issues, at 52 issues a year that's a long long wait to get a complete model kit.

I cannot believe for an instant that enough varied and interesting material in relation to tanks can be spread effectively across 140 issues. 49 maybe.

So you're looking at a total of £694.11

in addition to that you'll have to wait 2 years and 9 months to get all the components

Waiting nearly three years to get all the compnents is the reason I won't be bothering, i'd rather save for a year or two then throw the whole lot at a Tamiya R/C kit.

Shame as the first part looks quite interesting, now all I need to do is figure out what I can use a 1:16th scale 88mm cannon for

I don't want to seem like the miserable bugger but theres a flaw in your plan, in the DVD it explains that the tracks are built of individual links, I can assure you, (as i've seen similar before), that the tracks will be supplied a small handful of links at a time over several issues with one or two other small components, if indeed they are the same theres not the slightest hope that they'll supply even a full track for one side with one issue.

The exact same thing happened with the James Bond Aston Martin DB5 that was around recently, (that was one I was seriously considering being a big Bond fan), So to get the spares you'll need to order back issues, hope that there are none exhausted with the bits you want which'll be 4.99 + an additional fee for shipping out and will most likely cost you more than the upgrades themselves.

However, if you're getting the whole series then it's worth waiting to see anyway, you never know.

Maybe you could start a thread, it could be a record setter, the forst thread to cover a build over two years and nine months

I think you have a valid point on that Mike. Also, I am slightly worried about the comments made by Martin re the possibility of it drying up. I would have thought this would be a case for trading standards though as they are not supplying an advertised thing and, by not completing it, they would be selling something not fit for purpose (a kit that cannot be completed is not a kit therefore not fit for purpose).

A few years ago I started a partwork for a three wheeled robot bug thing. I did eventually get all I wanted although, oddly, they kept adding to it as the technology was increasing and they kept making it more advanced. The trouble is, when we moved house 3 years ago, I threw away about 30 issues that were still in the packaging and I had never actually completed building it. I do think that realistically, it would take some dedication to spend nearly three years keeping the interest going. I realise that if you subscribe, they come in packs of four so you are looking at 4 bits to do every month. I also had bought for me about ten years ago, a subscription to a Harley Davidson collection, halfway through that, they asked if we wanted to continue the subscription or pay a one off fee and get all the rest of the models at once. Maybe they would do this with the Tiger but I doubt it.

I suppose if you put a fiver away each week for 80 weeks, that is a Tamiya tiger all together in one box and as exciting as an exciting thing that is very exciting..... then start saving for the tracks and the radio gear..... oh, decisions, decisions......

Have to agree with the above comments, ive been reading a similar thred on another forum also, it would appear this tiger is somewhat bizzarly put together, and ealy body with a late turret or something like that, also has bits and pieces on it that shouldnot be on it or have been omitted, the interior is wrong, wrong tracks and so on and so forth, im no expert onthis subject but it would apper those that are have totally dissed this build!!!!
