Vallejo Acrylic Matt Varnish 17ml bottle

Hi, Again thanks for your help on my previous questions. Printed the answers, so they are never toooooo far away if I need any info.

Just bought the above item.

My question is: How do you apply it?

Can it be put straight into the airbrush? or do you have to dillute it? If so what with? water or thinner?

Hi Garry I use the Vallejo varnishes and thin them with Vallejo thinners. I do this not because I know it to be necessary but because I've had problems with various varnishes in the past and don't want to take any chances. It works very well for me this way. Someone else may know that it thins okay with water in which case we can both save some money lol.

Hi Garry, I don't use an A/B, but brush paint only.

I do use Vallejo varnishes, gloss, silk and matt and I dilute these and all my Vallejo Acrylics with distilled water.

On occasion I have also used them straight from the dispenser with no problems.

So I suppose my method will work equally well using A/Bs. I really don't know.....But I bet there is someone on here that does!

Like Steve (stona) I use them in my airbrush but I thin them with distilled water. I have brushed them on the odd tiny bits too.

Thanks for the very quick replies.

- What is the ratio of distilled water and Thinners to the varnish you use?

(Where can you get distilled water, years ago used to top up the car battery with it, but all are sealed units now. Never seen it about.)

- Do you just make up what you need, ?

or can you store it in one of those small jam jar containers used in the under fed airbrush type.

I've just started stocking the Vallejo 55ml varnish, might work out better value for money

Gary, you can buy distilled water from most car spare shops ,halfords and even our local pound shop had some the other day. Which if they have it is the cheepest way to buy it as it was only £1 for 5lts. Most places it is between £3 and £4. I have a five ltr container under my workbench, and keep a bottle topped up on my bench for diluting my revell acrylics whether i brush or airbrush. Hope this is of some help to you.

ps sometimes its labell up as water for your steam irons so look out for it.

Distilled water, Deionised water, demineralise water, Goes under many names....

Hardwarestores might have it, as Colin said its also used in steam irons. Car spars shps should also have it. Some paint shops might to (both art and house paint).

With regards to thinning it, start with about 2drops varnish to 1 drop water. if its still to thick add a drop at a time untill it sprays well. Be carefull if you thin it to much it will run like mad!

I would not recomend mixing and keeping. Mix it as you need it.

I like the Vallejo Matt, I have sprayed it at full strength, 50/50 with alcohol thinners and with water. There is only one thing that you need to be aware of, it needs a really good shake before using it. Any acrylic varnish (I have no experience of enamel) will leave a white 'bloom' if not mixed very thoroughly.

Again a BIG thanks to everybody who has replied not only to this question, but also to my other ones that I have posted.

Six weeks ago it looked as though I wouldn't get my head around with all the paints, varnish, washe's, pigments etc.

Now after everybody has helped me on this forum, I am now looking forward to completing my truck and future models.

John said he stocks the 55ml Varnish, I take it you can use all of the above methods in applying it?.
