    Scale model mags & books

    Hi all,

I am wondering what peoples opinions are to the monthly magazines on offer in the local smiths?

I am a book man myself but occasionally I like the odd magazine to flick through.

I opted for the Scale Aircraft modelling mag recently and found that very informative but wondered what the others are like?

If anyone can recommend any good books that would be great too, my preferred subject is aircraft and military.

    Thanks

    Rich

I love magazines, it is taking the hobby to bed for a read. I do buy around three a month but it varies to the content. Sometimes I see a build of a kit I have in the stash and get the mag for later ref when I get around to building it. Sometimes I see a build and I get the mag for when I buy the kit. Mainly I am just inspired by reading the articles. The bottom line is that I buy a magazine based on the content rather than the mag itself.

Ditto. I do have quite a few reference books that I've built up over the years but I'll buy a magazine if there is something of particular interest.

          Thanks chaps!

Think I will keep an eye on the mag's, although I fear I will too be tempted to by a few when of interest.

Next challenge to hide them all from the wife!

I also subscribe to an online Geoff Coughlin's Scale Modelling Now Magazine. I know that a lot of people feel that subscribing to an online thing is wrong and that internet stuff should be free. However, I disagree and the work that goes into producing a magazine be it on paper or online is still a lot of work ad investment. I have had an article published in this mag as well, my review build of the Mini Art 1:35 WWII motorcycle. I intend to do more as soon as I have improved my reviewing, building and writing skills. I really do like the online magazine and would recommend it to anyone. There are various ways of subscribing, yearly 6monthly or monthly (as I do) at £3.99 per month. A lot of the build and review article can be downloaded as PDF files if you wish to view them offline or even print them. No need to worry about what you have missed, as a subscriber you have access to all the articles ever published (and you don't have to hide anything from the wife other than the credit card bill lol. They have recently started doing hi def video as well, still in it's infancy but these videos will be a great asset.

Geoff is a respected writer of modelling books and is no fly by nigh. I believe this online mag will only get better.

Put them inside a cover from Playboy or the like, she'll not say a word.

I subscribe to Model Airplane International so obviously I like it but I also like Scale Aircraft Modelling, which I might subscribe to next. Do any of you subscribe to a mag? or rather buy ad-hoc depending on content each month? I must admit, having the model mag arriving reminds me of when my comic arrived when a boy.. a good day

I like smith because you can try before you buy. Top Rank is AFV Modeller and then military in scale but I tend to have a good look thought first to see if its a good buy not.

AFV is £6 to £8 bi-mouth. but you get a really nice gloss and smelly mag. The smells important (like the Argos). All full colour and artical after artical no ads.

military in scale can be a bit hit and miss but still a great mag. Full colour gloss doesnt smell as nice as AVF. Great this week, all about make 'N' paint Nashorn

Ah ha!! so you're the chap stood in front of the modelling magazines preventing me from getting at them and stopping me from buying them!! The truth's out now!

I actually subscribe to Model Boat Magazine because I enjoy reading just about all the content and I got fed up of waiting for slupanter to finish his article in WH Smiths!!

I also subscribe to Ships Monthly and Bike Magazine but not being model related I guess they don't count. Probably my favourite modelling one is Tamiya Modelling International, I always end up drooling over something be it either the amazing finishes on a bike engine to the stunning replication of a tank hull steel work.
