Small Drill bits (Help needed)

Hi,

I have to drill some holes for some fibre optics.

I have 2 sizes of drill bit (with 2 of each spare as I am a little clumsy).

Sizes = 0.5 mm & 0.8 mm

My little drill that i was planning on using (Dremel clone) is too big to hold the bits if you know what I mean so how can I solve this problem ?

This is the first model I have built so I might be asking a proper stupid question, I don't know what it is I need (Ie the name of the solution or where to buy it)

Neil, I drill all my holes with an old set of jewellers screw drivers I picked up at the local DIY store. They go through plastic very easily, come in a pack of 6. Cheers Derek

Your best bet is a Pin Vice, the will hold just about anything down to zero. Double ended ones allow larger tools as well. Readily available and very cheap. John as them in the shop for just over £3 Modelcraft - Pin Vice - Double Ended

yep pin vice here as well also I have a small yankee drive.

Hi Neil,

The pin vice already mentioned is ideal for the job but time-consuming if you have to drill lots of holes. If you want to use an electric drill, you need something like this:

Hardware, Antics Toolbox, Mini-Drills | Antics Online

These are basically adaptors for small drills. They act as an extra 'chuck' which you can put into the existing 'chuck' on your Dremel.

You can also put the pin vice into the Dremmel but for most plastic applications I would rather have the control of using the pin vice in my fingers. You also run a higher risk of breaking a small drill when you are using a powered tool.

I use a pin vice to. However I have seen drill bits that are very fine on the sharp end but the shank that goes in the drill is a couple of mm thick. Just cant recall where I saw them. Might of been here

A good compromise between the pin-vice and the electric option, is the Archimedean mini drill stock with spring. I use this when I need to do extensive drilling and want to maintain a certain level of control.

Hi guys,

I will check all the options out and see what will work best. I will let you all know how it goes.

It's been a bit of a mission really as I estimated (this is my first model remember) about 1 month total time. Now at 6 months plus but most of the time has been getting tools and various other bits together so the next model should be quicker.

Getting there now though, need to paint / drill / lights /glue ....finished.
