Build the 1/48th then when you photograph it hold it with a ruler for scale but further away than the ruler, no-one will ever know :cheeseygrin:

Well I like the sound of this lots. I've never liked the look of a 109 with landing gear down, I like my legs straight ! So, this gives me the opportunity to build a 109 up in the air. Which in turn means (well to me anyway) I can use any average kit for this build. Which again, means that maybe even I can actually produce a model in a 'few weeks'......So, is the new airfix 109 average, or better than average ?

I'm in - Academy 1:72 BF 109 E ordered. I'm really looking forward to this, I've never done a (non) group build before . I just hope I can keep up with everyone !

I finally got around to getting my camera out so here goes.
I had intended to build this right out of the box - including using the glue and paints supplied. Unfortunately there are no descriptions for the internal colours (nor for the pilot) and the paints supplied in the kit don't match the paint numbers on the instructions! I'm not complaining too much mind, I got it for just less than £5 (inc. P&P) on ebay so that's OK.
Most of you know I like to work in the larger scales - that's why I've included a comparison picture showing one of the fuel tanks for a 1/32 Tornado. Only the gods know how I'm gonna be able to cope with this little thing!

Nice one Dave, when you have finished this, you may feel drawn to a 1:48 and realise just how big they are lol. Have you finished those single link tracks yet? I have a couple of sets need doing so if you want, I can send them over for you to do. I know you love doing them and it will give you something to do on these long winter nights ;-)Comment

Quick note Dave,
If you plan to use the supplied paints, have a look at the plans, you normally find that of the paints supplied some need to be mixed together to achieve a specified colour, this is generally shown by comparing the two numbers with a percentage ratio for mixing.
I will add to that, having done this with a 1/72 FW190 underside I discovered two things, one, the Humbrol acrylics don't thin well with IPA and you get a slightly gritty end result and he colour was nowhere near correct.
So in a nutshell, you can use the supplied paints but if you want to guarantee correct colour, I wouldn't.
(as a result i've got a nice little stash of mini humbrol acrylic pots which are ideal for little bits and touch ups.
The empty pots make good pots for oil paint washes.

I did check to see if there were any mix instructions but there weren't. Mind you, it's the dark earth that's missing and there's certainly no combination of the paints supplied that will give that.
I may very well use the green, black, aluminium and rust colours supplied. I always use acrylics but I've not tried Humbrol before, so this seems an ideal opportunity to give them a go.

Airfix bf109-E4
This will be the whole build as my computer went down and its took a while to fix it. The man in the shop assured me that this was a new mould . However I'm not sure about that. The detail is all raised with rivets the Clyde shipyards would be proud of. However I thought I would give it a go just for the practice. I tried to give it a bit of detail in the cockpit even to the stage of modelling the gun sight. (You won't see it as I knocked it off during the major filing I did to get the fuselage halves to mate up, and couldn't get it to stick back on). The port fuselage half was larger that the starboard and although the top mated up ok the bottom left a ridge of mammoth proportions and a lot of filing was needed to to get a smooth join which of course destroyed all the panel details. The engine cover/panels were also a very sloppy fit needing a bit of filler to get a smooth join. The wings were very loose in the locating slots and I had to build a jig to support things at the correct dihedral angle while it all set. Finally the canopy was too small and only just lodged on the edges of the cockpit. In hindsight I should perhaps have chosen the Revell 109.
Anyway here are the pics, I did try this preshading thing but things looked very grubby afterwards and I didn't notice any difference after painting.

I think I am safe in saying that is not the new tool kit. Whatever, you have made a really good job of building it. OK, the rivets do look impressive don't they lol but, as I found with the old Hurricane kit, I hope you enjoyed the experience and can look back on it as a job thoroughly well done.Comment
