Car? It's a toss up between an '83 Sierra XR4i (my true love until some thieving little **** "borowed" it) and my current Civic Type R. I think the Sierra is still edging ahead though just because it was so useless in the wet around roundabouts!Bike? Easy. My lovely Speed Triple that's sat outside now waiting for a good clean & polish at the weekend.
A friend of mine a couple of years ago turned up with his brand new Civic Type R. We decided to try it out over the tops of the Pennines so I took him along my favourite bike route over the tops with the wives in the back. First of all I've never actually been in a vehicle which really did make my teeth chatter as the suspension was rock hard and when we got back home both wives swore they would never go in it again. They looked a bit green as well. Cracking performer but very impractical!! Good fun though.
Funnily enough the same guy used to have a Speed Triple but then he got a Rocket III. Well he is from Essex!
Some good old cars popping up here, Vauxhal Belmont, theres a blast from the past, but do you remember the Vauxhall Chevette, pushed one of those many a time home...
"Vauxhall Shove it", second wife had one of them. Should have seen that as a sign!
My first car was a 77 passat GT, I bought it with built up savings after I got my first job. My dad helped me to pick it up, it was in perfect condition, not a scratch and the engine was in perfect state. Hated the transmission though. I had just learned how to drive and was very careful with it. Good memories and great adventures taking the ladies for a spin.
I've not heard of most of these makes we do'nt get them over here. Geuss I'm off to google some of these lol ,My first auto 1972 Ford F-150 pick-up and my first scooter was a 1979 Kawasaki SR650
I had lot of bikes until a trackday accident stopped me riding for good.My last was an Aprilia RSV1000.Over the years I also owned a Laverda 1000 triple,Suzuki GS1000,Z900 and GSXR750.but the most fun I had was on my CBR600,not the fastest but probably the safest and best handling of the lot.
First car 1954 Renault 750, second hand, flat out at 60mph, even with the wind. Biggest regret selling that. Had been fully rebuilt from the ground up by my Mum and Dad. Was magic.
Most fun car, Hillman Imp GT (sport in UK), 998, inches of the ground, decent fat tyres with adjustable shox, best handling car I've ever driven. Drove it all over Britain for 4 years. Left it behind when I left. Owned another 6 since then
For me its got to be my first car , which i got for my 18th birthday. A 1966 mk1 ford cortina for the sum of £50. I ended up jazzing it up and respraying it with some very expensive Ault and Wiborg paint (aston martin storm red) that i got for free as they were chucking it out at work (at the time i was an apprentice sprayer at a bodyshop that used to do aston martin repairs !) I did the car red with a white roof and a white scallop running from the front arch round to the sill, what with the white dash top , white steering wheel, red metal dash and striped seats it looked well lary-my missus hated it- she said everyone looks when we go by , i used to say yes thats the point!!! Ill try and scan an old pic ive got of it, tony edit. found em!!
I've had many bikes and cars.but the bikes were the best.had to give up riding in 2000 after a bad track day accident..My last bike was an Aprilia RSV1000.I've also had a Laverda 1000 triple,GS1000,Z900 and GSXR750.But think the best was probably the CBR600.Not the fastest but probably the safest and best handling. Then there was an epic ride with mates to the Bol D'or only FJ1100.....
For me the MKI Escort Mexico one of the top rally cars in the early 70's
My now brother in law had one of those. He loved it,trashed it,and went for an Opel Manta instead.
He bought his wife a Civic Type R (at least he said it was for her lol) a couple of years ago. I think I can say she didn't appreciate it! She said something about men never growing up. I took it for a spin over the tops around Darwen and down the Ribble valley....very nice but as someone else said not very practical.
The one I miss the most is my grey Cav 1600 with a SRI engine in with a straight thro exhaust pipe, it was so loud when you blipped the throttle it would set car alarms off in multi-storey carparks. I was a bad boy hehe..
My best memories are of the car i own now a 55 plate renault clio it looks good and everything works, when i got here there was only 20.000 miles on the clock.
I've had some strange and diverse 'Wheels' over the years from a 1960's 3 wheeler Bond which had a 250cc single pot Villiers engine fastened to the front steering thingy, so when you turned the steering wheel, the engine turned as well!
Also had a V.W 'Splitter' with 22 windows and a 6v system. A G reg. 1072cc Mini Cooper 'S' complete with carrycot in the back...All good memories.
Here is my real baby, which I have owned for 10yrs. A C reg. Panther Kallista, 2.8 V6 Fuel injected, ali bodied fun machine. Not a kit car, around 1100 Kallistas were built at the Panther factory in Byfleet before they went bust in 1992..... especially good at traffic lights when the young buck opposite sees a couple in this of 'Mature years' and starts to snigger!!!!!!
"No, please, not again!" sez the wife...
Great motor, it will keep up with most cars up to 70, then having the aerodynamics of a fence panel, it looses a bit of puff, still good for 120mph though, when no-one is about! lol
The other photo, which might be of interest was taken by my wife whilst we bombed around the Oulton Park Circuit in Cheshire on a charity open day, in a Panther I had before this one.
Happy days.
Ron
I know I should cover the no. plate but I don't think there are any hardened criminals on S.M.
NICE motor ron! you didnt let on that you were a boy racer (i use that term in its loosest form!!!) LOL I can just see you now - flying helmet on , face covered in dead flies, terrorising the cheshire back roads!! tony
