1/32 and 1/35 Scale

Is there much difference between 1/32 scale and 1/35 scale?

The reason I ask is that I'm having a hard time finding that perfect helicopter/small (civilian type) plane for a diorama.

The rest of the diorama be in 1/35 scale (4-6 figures and a hummer type vehicle) and I don't want to go getting something in 1/32 if it's really going to look a bit odd but I'm really struggling with this last piece.

I would be keen to know this too, but for other scales too.

Also, is it possible to mix and match scales. i.e. if I placed a 1/48 aircraft (airbourne) on a 1/72 base would it appear to be further away from the ground, or would it just look daft.

Well it seems to be a question of kit manufacturer. Many kits are not accurate to scale anyway, regardless of what it says on the box. If you find a, lets say, 1/32 Cessna-172; you'll have a 34cm wingspan rather than 31cm. Not much of a diff. if you ask me and if you really what to get even closer you can try out some modding while you're at it.

It's all a question of how much of a difference you are prepared to put up with. If we are talking about the difference between 1/35th and 1/32nd figures they should look no more differnt than taller and shorter people. Vehicles you would probably also get away with as you are only talking of a small difference.

Daniel also has a good point in that manufacturers differ slightly in thier interpretation so as long as the scales are close you should be fine.

Scales do vary by maufacturer - if you've ever put a Dragon 1/35 figure next to a Tamiya 1/35 you'll notice that the Tamiya is noticably smaller. But as Richard says this could be something that is actually more true-to-life, not everyone is 6' tall! I'm planning a gangster dio with an old Pyro 1/32, 30's car, I'll be filling the dio with 1/35 figures and live with the supposed scale difference.

All the above,I think that 9 out of 10 times noone would know that 1/32 and 1/35 have been mixed. I've mixed 1/72 an OO (1/76 I think) with no adverse comments.

Penny's question about mixing totally different scales is more tricky. Generally you won't get away with it but I've seen it done to force perspective quite convincingly (not by me I hasten to add). It's a bit like the size of cows as discussed in "Father Ted".

HI drew , dont forget that academy do quite a few helicopters in 1/35 ,all military but with a bit of fettling maybe you could turn one into a civilian heli, good luck , keep us informed cheers tony

Daniel, Paul, Richard & Steve, thanks, I always thought there was a bit of variation between manufacturers but as it's been so long since I've made any models I wasn't sure.

I'm sure the gangster dio will look great, Paul, I'd be interested in seeing that one when it's done.

Tony, funnily enough, I was thinking about one of the Academy Kiowa models for converting to a civvie chopper.

I think that's the way I'll go.
