Cold Heat guns.

Has anyone tried one of these new Cold Heat soldering guns currently being advertised on the television ? apparently you place the soldering point onto the joint,press a switch or pull a trigger and instant heat.If they work as well as they say then this must be a soldering revolution,how hot do they get ? and are they suitable for heavier soldering jobs as opposed to just circuits or light jobs etc.

They sound very interesting,cost approx £20.

well considering they only have a small tip you wont be able to do heavy jobs with it as there wont be enuff heat transfer

*** This could be the answer to soldering up battery packs,a job that requires just what this tool does,heat when you want it,it sounds more like a weld than a solder ? must get one.

cold heat review

I bought one of these the other day. I already have a few antex mains and gas powered irons so thought I’d give this a try.

Well they definitely are different. The tip I think is large enough but does not get hot until both ends of the tip are making contact with a conductive piece of material. When it gets hot there is enough heat to melt the solder ok , however because its not always hot you cannot stroke a wire with solder and the iron and expect to get a nicely coated piece of wire.

You could use it to coat a fine/single strand of wire with solder but nothing too heavy as it will become tedious. It does cope Ok with attaching a pre coated soldered wire to a pcb for example as you are applying the nib to a flat surface you can press down on. I’d say for £20 its worth having but not as a replacement soldering iron.

You cant beat the gas powered ones for portability –maplins are doing one on sale for half price now £20 Solderpro 70 Gas Soldering Iron Kit Manufacturer: Pro-Iroda

I’d recommend you buy that instead for portability –unless you already have one.
