    Airfix Model World

I just wanted to let everyone know about the above magazine. I purchased issue number two just before Christmas and was amazed at how good it is. The articles are really well put together and are as useful for beginners as they are for more advanced modellers. Most magazines seem to be a bit intimidating as the models they describe are at a level far above what we could ever hope to achieve but the Airfix Mag is perfectly balanced.

The effects and procedures are well described and you find you can't help but want to get into your workshop and have a go. I was so impressed that I immediately sent off for a back copy of issue one and that is just as good so I will be subscribing very soon.

I'd can't recommend the magazine enough and suggest that you at least pick one up and see what you think.

Yeah i have to agree with richard it is a cracking magazine, i got the first issue as soon as it came out (2 months ago) and it really is a good read. One thing i do like about it is that although it is an airfix mag they make othe rmakes of models and even when building an airfix kit they use vallejo, tamiya paints etc, so its not just a marketing exercise for airfix. Hats of to them i say.

From my sick bed, but slowly getting better lol. Have to agree Richard, I got the first one and was quite impressed. Issue two confirmed it to be a good magazine. Not as heavy going as some, a very good read. Would certainty recommend it.

        Just an FYI.

It's not an actual 'airfix magazine' but a modelling magazine who's publishers have been granted the use of the Airfix logo, (a very smart marketing move for the UK modelling market as Airfix, the name, is synonymous with plastic model kits, you say Hasegawa to someone and see the response, then say Airfix and watch them go, 'ahh, yes, spitfires etc', given that the market is already quite well provided with SAM, SAMI and FSM to name the three I occassionaly pick up it should serve them well.

As a result the contents are definitely Airfix top heavy, (not a bad thing given the fact Airfix are glossed over in other publications often), but for this reason they aren't tied to using purely airfix models or even Humbrol paint and finishing products, some reviews even eschew Humbrol products over a modeller preferred alternative like Testors, Mr Color, Vallejo etc.

Incidentally I also think it's an excellent magazine, issue 2 particularly so as its a Bf109 special, i'd happily recommend it to anyone based on the 2 issues so far and for one like to see a wider range of Airfix kits so well represented and in so much detail

While we're on the subject of scale model magazines, what kind of magazines are out there?

None of the shops in Inverness seem to stock model magazines and as I have made the decision not to re-subscribe to the Games Workshop magazine I'm on the hunt for a new magazine.

I'm guessing you can get them by genre as well as general scale modelling.

I'm mainly going to be doing figures/dioramas (with the occassional helicopter or vehicle thrown in) so something that is geared only for aircraft wouldn't be ideal.

I'll look into the "Airfix" one but would appreciate some personal recomendations, if you would be so kind.

I've always bought Tamiya Model Magazine International but I must admit it tends to be more of a drool rather than improving my modelling skills. There are lot of more specialist stuff such as aircraft and armour mags but the reason for starting this thread was to highlight the fact that the Airfix Model World Magazine is such a good read and aimed at real world modellers. The articles are far more of a tutorial nature rather than a showcase style and are really well put together. They also do a good, across the board, range of model types which is very refreshing to see and really enjoyable.

SAM and SAMI are both aircraft related.

FSM, (fine scale modellor), covers a multitude including figures and building, armour also features strongly in that one.

Others I can't comment on as I haven't tried any, AMW, (airfix), is good as it currently covers a good range, issues one and two have had planes, cars, miniart house and tanks so far.

Military Modelling is a long established mag and covers AFV's, figures and diorama's occasionally. Military Modelcraft International is also a well established mag and although covers vehicles mainly it also covers figures and dioramas most months. There are genre specific mags for figures but not aware of any for diorama's. HTH Paul
