Crash and Burn! One dead PC

Earlier tonight while reading the forum a strange thing happened. I clicked on a link in a thread I was reading and I got a Blue screen then the PC shut down. A strong smell of burning plastic and sparks came from the PC case. Erm Help!!!!!! Pull the plug very quickly. Lucky I have another PC in the cupboard which i use for gamming. Looks like the old PC is DEAD! I just hope the harddrive isnt fried as it contains all my pics and links to other sites.

Swapped power supplies over,PC still dead. Looks like its either the CPU or the Motherboard is dead. I think it is the CPU and CPU fan as they were very hot when I took the side off case. Will have to strip the pc down to check the motherboard over.

At least your hard drive should be intact and you can retrieve all your files. It makes me cringe to think of something like that happening to me as I can't remember the last time I backed up!!!

Don't you just hate it when that happens!!

My Laptop went the same way a while ago. At least with a desk top you have the option to repair or swap out bits.

My high tower did the same trick as yours did a couple of years ago, blue sparks, smoke, the whole nine yards.

              Fun In'it!

That's a dangerous road to take Richard. msm2's story is only one of many. I've lost a hard drive on a laptop and SWMBO lost one on her office PC,both within the last five years. The price of external drives now makes backing up your valuable files or even "replicating" your computers entire hard drive an easy and cheap option. A lot cheaper than trying to recover information from a trashed drive. When SWMBO's went (on what was effectively her business computer) she hadn't backed up for twelve weeks and it cost about the same as a new computer to retrieve about 90% of the data on the drive!

I back mine up everyday and so does SWMBo now!

                Cheers

                Steve

Well the pc is now up and running. It now contains 3 harddrives to boot. Operating system, model pics and Backup. All pics are safe and sound. Still couldnt find what caused the crash and burn. Will have to do a complete strip down and have a look at the CPU,but that can wait for a while. Im just glad I have my pics back. :badcomputer2::computer:
