Here's a great question, how do you feel about Revells?

Dear guys (and gals?),

Perhaps it's just me, but every Revell that I attempt to build (Even the 40 dollar ones) Seem to have horrible crease lines, even worse dead space between parts and in some cases, warped parts. Perhaps it's because I am a newbie, so far I have thrown every revell I attempt to build in the trash. That's how much they piss me off.

What have your experiences been like?

Funny thing is I've been building a Revell 1/24th McLaren MP4-25 F1 car for the last 8 weeks and it's been fighting me pretty much most of the way.

I fing the plastic quite soft, especially on the small intricate parts, some to the point of falling straight off the sprue or falling apart when delicately spraying them. Had to rebuild a few bits with the help of MrCement. And the flash and seams and pretty horrid too!

Must say though, I've learnt a hell of a lot in the process.... mainly to never try an F1 car again

Revell's models are a lot like the above, but to me that makes them more of a challenge, a lot of parts to there kits i scratch build, sometimes that is part of the fun.....the mmmm now how am i going to rebuild that bit.

the thing is they do have some interesting subject matter, but over all i do agree they are not the best. but like i said it part of the fun and learning.

Have to say that i've had no real problems with Revell kits. Maybe the older ones might be a bit suspect but their new kits are great (imho). Only real kits that have fought me are the old airfix kits and one Academy kit

I bought the 1/72 DH Comet last year, didn't realise it was the original tooling. I tried to throw it away 5 times but the wings were so bent it kept coming back like a boomerang!

Seriously, if it was built to scale the wing root would be about a foot out!

Revell covers two entirely seperate companies.

There is the original Revell from the US which was merged with Monogram in the mid-eighties. Some of the Revell Monogram (Revellogram to modellers) kits are very old indeed but some are also very good. That company has now dropped the Monogram from the name and trades as Revell.

Revell of Germany (ROG) even as a subsidiary of Revell USA started developing its own line of products back in the seventies. It is now an entirely independent company responsible for the recent large scale Ju88 and He111 for example. Some of its newer kits are very good. Like Revell USA some of the old ones are dogs.

I think all manufactures have bad kits at some time. Even Tamiya had some serious accuracy problems at the start. Which in typical Oriental fashion were corrected quite promptly.

Revell do some darn good kits. As steve pointed out their new large scale aircraft are very good.

I've only ever bought one Revell kit and that was a 1/72 Me262 which is only partially built. It seemed okay to me, but not sure how old the kit is..........

Hi Alex,that's a relatively recent (1997) kit from Revell Germany,hence the recessed panel lines etc. It's a pretty good kit as I remember.

i have done quite a lot of revell kits and found them to be fine to very good.i cannot comment on technical accuracy because i dont do that yet, i just build mainly out of the box .compared with the fact that most revell kits are a lot cheaper than the big name stuff,i am more than happy with them and have a fair few in the stash.

I recently finished a Revell Pontiac Club de Mer - a 90s reissue of a 50s kit. Some of it was absolutely woeful - the rear deck was well warped, making it very difficult to mate to the base and even then it failed to match up to the cockpit by a good 3 or 4mm. It also came with 2 figures, both of which are bizarrely posed, look alarmingly out of scale and whose 2 parts each had gaps of a couple of mm. But I forgive it all of that since it's such a beautiful thing...

I don't like the coffee flavoured ones...
