I've recently bought some Humbrol 35 enamel varnish - is this the same thing also? It seemed to be the same as humbrol modelcote but more than half the price, odd

Also, Steve, if it's going for that ridiculous amount and is the same end result as the new formulation then it might be worth whackin' them on eBay! Nice couple of new models there ;P

To be perfectly honest, I tried this stuff and wasn't all that impressed. I used acrylic varnish with much better results. Does anyone feel the same? Regards, Pete

Pete I now use Vallejo gloss varnish.

Reason hate Klear smell. Found Klear scratches easily & the varnish gives a tough resilient finish. Found decals go onto the varnish much better, not surprising as it is thicker & gives a more smooth finish. Totally compatible with the rest of the paint film (obsessed with keeping compatibility).

Down side you do have to really deep clean the airbrush with the varnish otherwise it will clog. Vallejo obviously does not have the Vintage value of Klear.

Last point. Some time ago I tested Vintage Klear with Contemporary Klear. Marked on the back of the test piece the types. I could not tell the difference between the two. But if any one is obsessed enough I have about three quarters of a bottle of Vintage Stuff. If any one is interested be quick as her in doors is about due to slop it all over our lounge floor (exit me door left to fresh air for two hours)..

Finally the above is my stance & only my stance. Take your pick Klear or Varnish. Best thing really is to try both as we all have such different "this is the best".

Really finally. More has been written about Klear than Tolstoy's wrote in War & Peace. Really nutty !

i have never tried or used Klear,so i`m not sure what it does,as for varnishing i dont use any on the planes sometimes i use hairspray for a wet looking aircraft,maybe one day if i find this klear stuff i might try and use it lol

It very good for providing a beautiful smooth surface for decals to adhere to without silvering. I use it with a brush and it self levels and gives a lovely even finish (usually!)

It's also good for setting decals,just position them on a pool of Klear rather than something like Microset.

But,and it's a big but,at the end of the day it is just an acrylic varnish,not some kind of wonder product which will miraculously convert your model into a masterpiece!
