I just made it under the wire; I found out on July 11, about 1:30am PT looking at about two or three days worth of emails, that 2 to 8pm that day was the deadline for drop-off of entries into the Adult Home Arts, etc. contests. I thought it was July 12 deadline! Anyhow, I only missed one little part, the "safety" on the rear-top of the E-8 adaptor. Made a big 25in x 26in poster with text and photos that would hang over the display's virtual naval deck-mount. Here is a photo of the project taken just before delivery to the faire:
Lots of paint touch-up, and new paint on new parts, especially the newly made nearly to spec (War Department Technical Order 11-10-9 of July 29, 1942) "Adapter Assembly, Gun Mount, Type E-8" as it is called in the T.O.
When I delivered the model, the ladies receiving the projects called a gentleman over who took one look and said "Those bullets have to come out of there!" I replied "There aren't any!" "What are those?" he asked, and I proceeded to un-load the faux belt and ammo-box from the model, and showed the belt-end "rounds" made up from K&S brass tubing and wood-dowel bullets, and explained briefly the mostly wooden construction at which point he said "It's OK." and went back to whatever he was doing before.
Defninitely not your usual county-fair model entry, especially in California! Will be interesting to find out how the model is received by the general public. I should take my camera and try to get candid photos of folks reaction to the model!
Hope I get another blue-ribbon, but if not, I hope the other winner has a real "bang-up" of a great model!
Faire runs July 25 through Aug 12, so I won't know how I did in the "comp" until it opens.
Until later,
Regards, John
p.s. My general health is improving steadily, and now the fair entry is done, I will be able to return to work on the PBY and the "Silverfin" sub soon (finishing up the "tommy-gun too, just uploaded some new photos and will have some new posts before very long).
