On breka's tele this morning they feature an Iraq Youth Orchestra.
They are playing in the Scottish Edinburgh festival with great help from Julian Lloyd Webber with his Cello.
They, the Iraq youth, cannot play instruments in their own country in public as this is decided very western in the eyes of some of the population. They will, if seen in public with their instruments, have them smashed to pieces.
There is very little, if any, tuition added to which any instruments available are of poor quality. But all of the youth orchestra are self taught via the internet. Now how about that for dedication.
A 17 year old Iraq girl has formed the Orchestra & they are now in Britain to show their talent & play in public which they cannot do in their own country.
Julian Lloyd Webber stated that a good number are playing at a professional standard which is incredible as they are self taught.
He went on to say that the trumpet section (normally the loudest of both the brass & rest of the orchestra) had to be persuaded to play loud. Such is the state that they have to practice softly to avoid problems.
First another great for the internet. Second & more important what about the dedication of these young people. We moan about out lot but these kids have gone out & done it all for themselves.
Really nice they received a standing ovation at their first concert before they had played a note. Notes are so much better than bombs & bullets.
