Not used any other acrylic varnish Lewis. But Vallejo does the trick for me. Which ever one Matt, Satin or Gloss.
I always airbrush the varnish. If you do make sure you give your airbrush a good clean top to bottom afterwards to avoid problems.
The Vallejo matt is really a flat matt matt. It comes out more matt than the matt Vallejo Acrylic Model Air Paint. Forgot to coat a matt painted piece a couple of days ago with matt varnish & it looks slightly satin compared to the matt varnished work.
Also found that the matt varnish covers up paint which looks a bit patchy. So it is worth matt varnishing before say gloss varnishing to get a nice evenness. The varnishes are also very very thin & do not affect detail. Despite that I have found them very resilient to wear & cleaning a model.
Thank you very much laurie, I shall buy both off eBay now as really want to finish my lynx off, but didn't want to use the humbrol one as it comes out a little weird
Another Vallejo fan here and I would also like to say, to all the members here, well those this side of the pond, buy every thing that you need from John at Scale Models Plastic Kits, AK Interactive, Vallejo Paints, Mr Hobby Aqueous Paints The service is top and the delivery is pretty darn quick. Its a small favour to ask for a man that spends so much time (and money) keeping this forum going.
You won't be disappointed. I order almost all my consummables (and anything else which he has that I need) from John and his service is second to none.
Ian said the service is quick and it is amazingly so. I have ordered at tea time, whilst dunking a Hob Nob, and my stuff has been in the post that evening which is really top class service.
I will just add to that, that some of our European members should take a look as well. I live, as I think the most have figured out in Denmark, and the longest I have had to wait for an order, from the day I get the e-mail telling me it has been sent is..... five days. Now that is pretty darn good. I will also say that sometimes I get thinks in three!
Not tried the Vallejo stuff so can't comment on it's finish and use but I can comment on Johns service which is nothing short of excellent, I swear he uses the pre-cogs from minority report to sense what people are going to order and ship it to them before they fill the online shopping basket.
