    come on Mr. Postman!!

    im starting on my holy grail super detail moto gp build tomorrow..ive gradually been assembling all the PE parts, resin, bits of carbon fibre, tiny axle bolts..you name it....im probably well out of my depth..but anyway..i received an email from John saying that my alclad paints, gator glue and whatever else is on its way!! Ive decided to go all out on the engine, reasoning that if im chucking shrink tube, fairy dust sized PE particles and unobtainium at it, then i might as well do all of the metal in alclad...

    Seriously, ive accumulated parts from just about every continent on earth...but im STILL waiting for the chainset...looks like the outer mongolian postal service isnt what its cracked up to be...ive even gone to the lengths of buying a duplicate kit for the inevitable disasters!

    How many of you lads have planned that big build and just thought 'to hell with it' and gone full tilt?? Did you manage to avert any disasters?!?

    Im not a very experienced modeller but ive made some decent progress..im probably biting off more than i can chew but ive learnt so much from the forum and from my own ground down molars that ive thought i might as well take it to the next level...trouble is, ive got a nasty, terrible feeling, that despite the inevitable dramas along the way, if the model comes out looking pretty saucy then they'll be no going back and building out of the box will seem like a Blue Peter project!!

    Well you really have begun the long slide down the slippery slope lol.

    I can't speak for others but yes I have gone full tilt at a model with all the knobs and whistles. Mine is (yes is, as I am still going at it), a boat. Of the kit I think there are maybe a dozen parts, the hull bridge house and engine house. Just about everything else is swapped out with PE, resin and white metal.

    I think that the total count for After market parts is in the region of a thousand parts. To be honest I did go cold on it and it has been sitting staring at me for about a year. I have all the parts, but its one of those things that will have to happen when the mood is right.

    The good news is that you can build a kit OOB after, and you are not afraid to get stuck in when the mood takes you. Most of my builds are pretty much out the box. A few of them get the full PE package and I have even done a couple of full resin kits. A big question you need to ask is how much difference it will make and if its worth it.

    Most of my builds are on here, so if you want, you can look them up.

    I would like to say that despite your problems, and lets face it you have had more than your fair share, you have built some great motorbikes.

      I agree with Ian- if you want to go the whole hog then why not? but if you also fancy a quickie(!!) then thats great also. There are pros and cons for both, ie. a very involved project featuring P.E. ,resin, etc will usually take a lot longer so may run out of enthusiasm after a while -it just never seems to be any nearer the finish .Plus the extra expense of all these aftermarket bits is going to push up the price ,adding another element ,the fear of messing it up and wasting all that time and money. On the plus side the results and satisfaction can be spectacular , making the price irrelevant - if youre happy with it then its worth whatever it cost. The simple out of the box build is another thing , it can be very satisfying to just build something fairly quickly and some newer kits give fantastic results OOB , however some older ones can look a bit basic when compared to a super detailed aftermarket accessory build . The price is always a factor too , the enjoyment you can get from obtaining a great looking result from a £4 1/72 kit OOB is every bit as good as the buzz from a very involved ,expensive (and probably a bit frustrating at times) , aftermarket build. I guess what im saying is that both types are as good as each other , just different ways of achieving the same objective , to get pleasure from doing it -as john (centurion 3rtr) says ------Have fun! tony
