For the book worm
HMS Amethyst a Back Swan Class Sloop/Frigate. Launched 1943 for WW11 battle.
But her history lies in one of the Royal Navies rich stories of this service played out after the war years. 1949
She found herself tangled up in the Yangste river in China whilst on her way from Shanghai to Nanking. On passage she was seriously damaged by the Communist Army Artillery & left her Captain killed together with many of the crew & leaving many seriously injured.
After months in the river with her captain now replaced, Lieutenant Commander Kerans, Ametheyst stole down the river at night with now with only 50% of her compliment to run the ship. A remarkable journey in pitch black of over 100 miles.
Accompanied at the mouth of the river by HMS Concord she cleared the river at 12:00 next morning. Kearans made a signal to the admiralty which is now stands with all those famous from the past.
Have rejoined the fleet off Woosung… God Save the King.
So the book which I picked up to read at every opportunity.
Escape of the Amethyest. Written by C.E.Lucas Phillips.
The chapter on the escape is exciting & I read that twice.
