    Photo thread

I thought I'd start a thread where we could post photos which we like, think are cool or have moved us in some way. They don't have to be "military" or even model related.

    Here's a few of mine:

    What a view!

It might be powered by giant hairdryers but it looks cool!

I spent a chunk of my young life in Africa and this resonated for me. As a youngster I remember being frightened by Biafran soldiers. This is rebels retreating from Goma.

    Finally my favourite Vietnam photo.

Finally one for our South African Friends. I understand that this was taken in 1964.

    Cheers

Cool photos of the view and the hair dryer. I see Chelsea fans are well armed in Africa.

Good idea for a thread as well.

There're many images that "make me think", "realise how lucky i am", "bring things home" or are just plain "cool" etc.

I like this idea of a thread to show them, i'll start, if i may, with an image that "gets me" every time i see it, it's on quite a few sites uncredited so i dont think copyright is an issue.

An infantryman comforts another soldier whose buddy has been killed in action. behind them is a corpsman filling out casualty tags, (Haktong-ni, Korea. Aug 28, 1950).

Not so much a photo, but an image from a video. I used to watch The World At War when I was a kid and the images of burning photos at the start of the program, some of them children, affected me then, and still does. The last one, at about 1 minute in on this vid is the one that got me the most. It's a picture of a man/soldier fading to almost a skull, it really brought home the consequences of WAR.

The World at War Opening and Closing Theme 1974 (Remastered) - YouTube

Whoever did these titles created some very powerful images.

        Tony.

You are right Tony and that programme still stands up today.

It has the advantage of having been made when many of "those who were there" could be interviewed to tell their stories. Many more recent and light weight documentaries have shamelessly plagiarised the original World at War.

          Cheers

To be less serious, how about this for total uncool! Greek soldiers!

"The World at War".Was it as long as 1974! One thing that got me was Laurence Olivier's narration. Talk about gravitas! A level tone all the way through which added a slightly creepy detachment to it. Marvellous. You have encouraged me to look for a DVD of it. A classic.

Oops! £32. Need to think about that.

I think it was shown on one of the TV channels a year (or two or three) and I caught a couple of episodes. Wish I had recorded it.

A recent BBC series (only three episodes) called "The Dark Charisma of Hitler" was really interesting and it will likely be repeated.

                  And his odd pronunciations......Sovyett Union......weird

"The nazis,a warning from history" is the only series of recent times that has come close for me,though obviously with more limited scope. It's narrated by Sam West, another Shakespearian actor of considerable ability.

He would be good for giving a kick in the teeth! Rumour has it that they are pretty hard. Just as the Vatican Guard as well..... It must be related to the uniforms I guess.

Apparently there's something called "digital camouflage" in this photo. It must be good because I can't see it
