A Ghost story for Christmas,By Wonwinglo.

    Wonwinglo’s Ghost story for Christmas.

The estate agents card in the window simply said ‘Country house with large back lawn’ the photograph showed an impressive old Victorian house, the place had not been lived in for years and ivy was winding its way around the exterior brickwork.

Young Charlotte said to her mum and dad, please lets go and have a look at it ! with her face pressed against the shop window she became fascinated with that big lawn, just think mum we could have a nice big tennis court on there, and horses, stables, pool room..now just wait a minute young lady said her dad,we have not even seen the place yet,and anyway we may not even be able to afford it ? pleaese mum, please dad can we go and see it today ? not one to give in she persisted that they at least go and have a look at the place, well why not said mum ? and then went inside to find out more,’good morning sir, said the person behind the desk, can I assist you ? well er.. yes we are interested in the large Victorian property that you have a card for in the window, swift as anything the sales assistant fumbled through some documents on his desk and came up with the details, young Charlotte got her way and clung to the keys for the property as they left to go and view the property, they made their way across country,up country lanes, across fields and finally up a very long winding drive to the large house.

Without further ado Charlotte shot out of the car and made her way to the large front door, mum and dad tagged behind and looked at the exterior of the building, the ivy had wound its way over the windows, around the guttering, birds nests coud be seen everywhere and cobwebs entwined the plants and doorway, young Charlotte fumbled with the key trying to get it into the lock to no avail, dad said here, let me have a try,the huge key was placed into the rusty lock and with much effort the door finally opened with a creeeeek as the rusty hinges protested at not having been opened in a very long time,a bat shot past in front of them and scared the living daylights out of mum !! everywhere there were drapes over the furniture, paintings hung haphazrdly on the walls, into the main lounge they followed each other in a line, the next surprise was a large table with a bottle of port and a large wine glass that had a rim of wine staining where it had been filled to,the whole place looked like the ‘Mary Celeste’ just as if someone had fled very quickly, then Charlotte spotted something that took her interest, opened on the table was a very old yellow and dusty flying magazine dated 1914,a picture of an S.E.5A and a young pilot with his flying goggles by his side,a half consumed cigar sat in a silver ashtray by the side.

Lets investigate upstairs said Charlotte as she danced around with her arms open as if to be flying ! as she clonked up the bare steep wooden staircase, mum and dad in tow and way behind, she was keen to explore,as she rounded the top of the stairs there was a small round window, hardly able to reach but keen to see the view outside she jumped with her arms outstretched, her head just able to peer out of the dirty glass window, her eyes scanned the horizon where fields rolled, trees, and birds wafted overhead, there was a large stone ornament at the end of the lawn,a cupid holding a chalice where water once flowed no doubt,as she struggled to hold onto the window ledge she saw something move from behind the ornament, suddenly a leather clad figure was stareing straight at her,his silk scarf wafted in the breeze and his flying goggles set upon his helmet, his white eyes sparkled with a rim of grimy castor oil around his face,as she looked in awe he appeared to just freeze dead still,in the frenzy she slipped from the ledge ans shouted to mum and dad !! quick come and see ot of the window she said, look there is someone in the garden, mum and dad followed quickly behind after hearing the dull thud of Charlotte falling onto the wooden floor fearing that she had hurt herself, what are you shouting about young lady retorted her dad ? look out of the window, there is someone out there ! dad looked out and saw nothing,he just smiled and said, young lady you certainly have a vivid imagination ! no honsetly dad, there really was someone out there, well we had better go and have a look then,he said as he made his way downstairs and out of the front door, and into the garden.

Meanwhile Charlotte shot off again up the next staircase to another room, once again with cobwebs everywhere hiding a door with a large handle, curious she opened the door and then just stood in amazement ! before her was a room filled with model aeroplanes, they were on the table in the middle of the room,on the cupboards etc some were made up,others were being built,a huge bookcase stood to one side of the room,it was filled with books on flying and pictures of aeroplanes filled the walls

she was so excited at what she had discovered that she shot out of the door downstairs to try and find mum and dad to tell them of her find,by this time they were looking around the garden trying to find the figure that she said she had seen before, there was not a trace of anyone around, only the birds circled overhead in a circle as mist was starting to settle on the trees,dad..dad..mum…mum come quickly and see what I have found upstairs in the house, mum and dad followed to the room upstairs and sure enough what the young lady has said was true, everywhere was dusty and dirty but mum suddenly spotted a letter that had been opened on the window ledge, she walked over and picked it up,the envelope was marked ‘War office’ and dated 1914,as she opened it a tear came to her eyes, the letter read ‘We are sorry to inform you that your son was killed in a flying accident in France,we will be fowarding his personal belongings shortly by separate cover…’ the three of them went downstairs and through the front door locking it behind them carefully, nothing was said and they went towards the car and made their way home, what had they discovered that day in that old house ? was it a time warp of times past, one thing was for sure they decided to carry on looking for another property and leave that one alone.

After returning to the town to the estate agents to give in the key,the person behind the desk asked what he could do for them,we have the key to the property dad said, which key is that ? mum fumbled into her handbag to find the key,it was nowhere to be seen ? you know the key for the property at Remington hall said dad ! sorry we have no property by that name on our books said the assistant, then one by one they just stared at each other and said nothing, had they really shared something from the past,if so it was best left alone.
