    Revell 1/32 P39D Airacobra

Well I was going to buy this new release from Revell but a little 'birdy', much talked about on other forums, has told me that it's just a re-boxing of a Special Hobbys kit.

I was getting really excited about this one with the knowledge that all of Revells' most resent releases have been brand new toolings. Oh well I will have to wait and see how the reviews go before I commit myself.

It looked pretty good made up on the Revell stand at Telford.Unfortunately I didn't get a look at the sprues so can't comment on the quality of the kit.

I didnt know that Vaughan , very interesting! I think the Special Hobby kits are quite well regarded , so the Revell repop should be fine , plus it will be a lot cheaper im sure (although it will undoubtedly be missing the etch and resin usually in the SH kits ). If it comes in at well under £20 i'll be getting one myself !! cheers tony

I cant say what special hobby kits are like but I got caught out with Academy and Tamiya versions of Tirpitz .

I got the Academy version first because I was impressed with the detail on their Warspite kit but was realy disappointed with the Tirpitz kit so when I saw the Tamiya Tirpitz I thought that's got to be better and it was the same kit! Now I don't know who knicked what off off whom or weather one licenced it out to the other but the Tamiya kit was £20 dearer :banghead:

Your right there Tony no resin or PE and some flash is evident I gather the cockpits pretty sparse too. Modelzones price is £29.99 on their website. It's a real shame that after all the effort they have put into producing the Arado, He111 and their latest offering the He 219 Uhu all at really affordable prices. The Arado is £5 cheaper with fantastic detail as does the He111 which has just been reduced by Modelzone to £49. So I'm not quite sure where the Airacobra fits in.

I am thinking that I might get the Special Hobby one in due course. The reviews are good. Not used resin yet but will do so on my next build, the JU88, with the MDC bomb racks and bombs and have an Eduard bf109 to do with resin as well. I will wait until I have seen what resin is like to work with before ordering another kit with resin in it.

It is a pity Revell have not brought out their own new tool P39. But then I also say that about the Hurricane, Tempest etc!!!

Barry the Special hobby Airacobra for £35 from Hannants includes the resin exhaust stacks, gun sight and PE parts, so maybe is better value. They also sell a wealth of after market add-ons and if you bought them all would total £100.55. So ultimately the Revell re-boxing is saving you no money as PE and resin for £5 extra is good value.
