    A legal Christmas Greeting !

I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to my friends, but it is so difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my solicitor yesterday, and on his advice I wish to say the following:-

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter/summer solstice holiday, practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practise religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2013, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that it is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

Disclaimer: No trees were harmed in the sending of this message (DO NOT PRINT!!!); however, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced.

From my friend in Kent who supplies these dopy things to me on a regular basis. And Keeps me smiling.

      Thank you very much Laurie

I've taken on board all you say but do however take slight offence at the word "solstice" which is derived from the Latin, thus being of European origin.

Could you please resend the Christmas Greeting with the change made to "first point of Cancer"/"first point of Capricorn"

I know these names are no longer accurate due to the movement and change of the equinoxes as they will now be in Sagittarius and Taurus, but they will be more appropriate to all Neopagan believers you send this to.

In replying to this i sit along side you awaiting the court case for "harrassment" issued against us by electrons suffering added inconvenience.

Thank Ians & to you as well.

Mum & Dad used to travel at Christmas up to Hull from London to spend Christmas with my lovely now departed, some time ago, maternal grandparents.

All on the train in the late forties. Took from memory 5 hours. Boring for a young boy with his head resting on the window which tapped out the rythm of the sleepers.

When we reached Doncaster, refered to by my Yorkshire Hull born mother as Donny, I knew we were getting close to Hull's Paragon Station. A personal visit to "Donny" some 15 years ago but very short.

Also of momentous interest is that when 20 I took, on a visit to grandma, my Triumph Thunderbird & bullett sidecar across the Humber on a paddle steamer ferry. Think it was the last year they ran. Happy days.

        Laurie

Not guilty Colin I pass on the piece as an ignorant bystander of devoid of literary, historical or Latin talent & many other things to extensive to write about in the time I have left on this planet. Quite good at reviving my cockney accent one of my few major talents.

I bow to your vastly superior talent & will abide by your decree.

going off the main thread (sorry) but you say "revive" your cockney accent. were you born or raised in those climes then Laurie?

Yes Colin but on the oust skirts of London Chessington area. World of Adventure fame but the cockney accent at that time was rife all over with some differences. Clipped words & the destruction of all known vowels.

Talked above about Hull & visits to Grandma.

Mother & Grandma insisted on Sunday School (hated with meccano just waiting for my attention at home) which consisted of reading small passages in groups of six or seven kids all about 6 or 7.

When it came to my turn 6 pairs of ears were tuned & eyes were glued on my face. Before television days & where accents were very strong. I had heard Hull accents before but they had not any experience of a broad London accent & were fascinated by this boy who came with this weird way of speaking.

Well I would Like to stick with the more traditional Merry Christmas, not a Christian myself, but large enough to respect other peoples beliefs and faiths.

Colin if you wish to avoid the use of solstice you could just call it what it is. The longest night, or shortest day if you prefer, but its a lot easier to say winter solstice. lol

Thank the Romans for the fact that we have Christmas when we do. T'was them that placed it there, to cover the pagan festival and a few other miscellaneous celebrations. Yet another one to add to the list "what have the Romans ever done for us"?

                              I'm fine with everything

on re-reading my post it could be taken that i was being serious ..... i was in fact just being silly because the "legal" context of the original wording was to cover every eventuallity and not to offend anyone .. i immediatly thought about all those that dont recognise the solstice and so thought i'd post a daft reply on this theme.

On the Romans, yep you're right, the original Roman "Saturnalia" which was a festival dedicated to Saturn (the god of agriculture) was held around this time and banquets and gift giving was part of the festivities.
