Boeing B-17 Ammo-box Drawings Arrived, Finally!

It has been more than a year since I built a 47% scale-model, scratch-built, of the familiar B-17 Side-Gun Ammo-Box, before I even knew what it was:

The one I modeled is apparently as used on the original B-17C and B-17D; that box was revised for the B-17E and B-17F.

it took me a year to actually identify through Smithsonian NASM, and my first order for copies of the drawings had got lost in the mail, which I found out two months later! NASM, however, processed my replacement order in record time; I placed a new order in the mail on January 2, and they arrived Tuesday January 22!

I've been really excited (although "excited" at my age is not as "tingly" as it was in my youth!) since receiving these; much to study, and much to figure out, and more research on the web, but I've already begun to figure out things, by "putting 2 + 2 together," that would normally only be found digging through Boeing change orders in the actual Boeing Archives!

Should be able to update a few touches on the side-gun box, and eventually make models of the two others, which are hardly known, and I've never come across more than one photo of one of those rare items.

    Regards, John

That ammo box looks very realistic John. Interesting information, and very impressive that you have all that Boeing data to hand.

I've also got a heap of armament diagrams (from AAF T.O. "flight and installation/service" manuals) as well, 01-20EB1 (B-17B), ..C1, ..C2, ..D1, ..E2 & ..F2! Makes for intesting study, and I'm writing up an essay that I will put up as a pdf explaining as much as I can in one place, the basic early B-17 armament; hopefully I will be able to use my ancient AutoCAD to generate some good perspective drawings, suitable for WWII model-builders and enthusiasts, that can go along with it (I do not have "intellectual property rights" for the original Boeing drawings).

      Regards, John

Hi John, I love your work.

Thought I might mention computer drawing program called Sketchup, have you heard of it. You may want to take a look at it if your CAD is old. Its a free program easily downloaded and is very intuitive and has a very fast learning curve, there are loads of tutorials to watch on you tube, its really revolutionizing many CAD operations. Check it out. M
