Step by step or finished threads?

    Hi guys!

It's a simply question! What do you prefer, step by step or completed threads?

My last threads I do step by step because I like to think, that the people observe and can share "secrets" between us.

But it's a dangerous theme too, sometimes looks like you want to show or teach at other members...and is not that!

    - Do not use this, do that one, better looks the different thing...!!

    Or prefer:

    - This is my finished model!! Hope you like it!!

    Cheers

I think step by step are worth posting because other members can follow the build and appreciate what goes into it, how it goes together, what to watch out for etc etc.

If another member want to build the same model, then they have a reference thread to go over and see what issues there were if any.

I dont think any of us would assume the person is trying to "teach" us or tell us their way is "the best" .... i think it all comes across as friendly sharing of help and advice.

Every one has different ideas and ways of doing things .... if we all end up with the same result then i can't see a problem.

I must admit i do like to see a completed kit just posted up out of the blue though .... i like the "suprise factor"

I think step by step is fine.

It's a good way of showing how you've gone about a kit and like Colin I don't think you need to worry about people thinking that you are patronising them in any way.

I don't always do a step by step because I'm lazy, but I do try to show any stage that might be unusual or which I think might be helpful or interesting to others.

I like to share a bit of the history too. Some might find it interesting, it might bore the pants of others, but then they don't have to read it

I can say personally that I always enjoy following your builds, and of course everyone else's.

      Cheers

I'd forgotten about that .... yes, the history of the subject in the build is always a nice "extra", as are some of the little made-up stories that go with some builds (yep .. guilty) ..... all adds to the finished article in my opinion.

For me it is essential seeing the builds Polux.

Just started on a Lysander & both Colin's recent & Vaughan's build a few months ago of that aircraft & being the same model have & will be I am sure very helpful.

Love the history bit. Try if I put a passage to keep it mini as it is probable that people will read it more rather than a long passage. Also try & break into short paragraphs as it is a fact that people will gloss over long paras.

Think also it shows members characters & that fascinates me. Linked how they go about things compared to me.

I like following step by builds and like Colin & Steve don't see any "this is how you do it" kind of thing on here at all.

It's great to watch a kit/dio come together and I'm always picking up hints and tips, my modelling is a solo affair none of my friends do this so this forum is my main source of information and instruction, the friendly atmosphere here makes me feel comfortable about asking questions and posting my projects.

Like Steve I'm too lazy to do a step by step for every build and don't expect others to do so but they are a real bonus. M

                You're not wrong!

I've been following Colin's (CDW) Hummer build as it is the same kit that I have and I have absolutely no clue how it should be done.

Despite having been modelling for a while I have never built a vehicle before and need all the help I can get

                Cheers

Step by step for me. That way you can explain how you've done things so that other people can see what may lie ahead should they build the same model. Also goes to show the effort you are putting into a model. I don't personally think it's showing off. We all try to progress in this hobby and if learning new techniques from other people via step by step builds helps then long may it continue.

It's step by step for me. Everyone has different techniques and I've certainly learnt a lot from this forum. Obviously you need to take time out to photograph each stage of your build as it's good to look back on builds that have already been done and use as a reference point.

Well I'm a supporter of both camps-

You may have noticed that I have not posted a step by step for a while. I also owe some photos of a Vosper Torpedo boat.

I tend to build and take finished photos of well covered subjects, Things that are not built that often, I will though do a thread of the build.

My Mojo is at a low right now, so when I get to the bench, I tend to build and get on with it. Having to stop and take pictures all the time I would loose momentum.

I like to see step by step builds. And I like to post them myself if I'm building something out of the ordinary like my recent Anson build. At the moment I'm doing the Revell/Hasegawa 1/48 mk9 Spitfire. This is a very common subject and a nice kit with no pit falls.I haven't posted a step by step as I think most would find it a bit boring.I also like to include my mistakes and cockups to show im not perfect.Hopefully some will identify with that!.

Got to agree with Ian and Dave above, I tend not to do a step by step if its a popular ,well covered subject or if its a fairly uneventful build. If, however, I know its going to involve a lot of bashing and extra detail added I try to show as much as possible in the hope it might be useful/interesting for someone. Another factor ,as Ian says ,is that sometimes the constant photo taking and posting can slow the build down and lose a bit of momentum , so occasionally a finished build will just pop up unannounced! tony

I like step by step aswell. I just wish I was a bit better at producing a proper build thread.
