Way back in the mid 80s I worked in Munich on a film called Terminus. It was an awful Franco-German Mad Max type thing. The 1:1 scale model U boat on which most of the interior scenes in Das Boot was filmed was still on the site and I had a chance to have a good poke around with one of the German sound engineers who'd worked on the film. Even with just the two of us aboard it was cramped! It certainly gave some food for thought.

I haven't seen the movie this oft used clip is from but the first, (to my knowledge), useage of the clip was, Hitler's Honda was written off and he gets a BMW, being a bike rider there are 'preconceptions' about certain machines as you get with cars, the BMW thing had a popularity explosion after Long way round but have always had an 'agricultural' reference levelled at them, (as with HD, particularly by Jap bike riders). This clip is absolutely rip roaringly funny. Despite the amusing subtitles, you can see the acting is top notch and the fella playing Hitler probably giving the best weary desperate last days performance i've ever seen.

Re war movies, Ice cold in Alex is truly a classic, I also like Above us the waves, on a more modern theme, Kellys Heroes is excellent entertainment and oddball and his musical paint firing Sherman is just great, on an even more modern note I (much to my surprise), very much like Inglorious 'bar stewards'

As for the thought of being walled up in a tin can underwater of any size, no thanks, i could manage short stints in a little one man 'leisure' sub for the novelty but the people who served on them are braver than I

i would love you guys to make a definative list of all the best "old" war films that as a youngster of 42 will of missed. seen a few oldies but there are a hell of a lot i havnt seen. watched " a bridge too far" and "the longest day" a few weeks ago and loved them.

Hmmmm.

Ice Cold in Alex is superb.

The Cruel Sea is Jack Hawkins at his best.

The Dambusters is iconic, and stars Richard Todd; one of the first allied soldiers to set foot in France on D-Day. He was part of the team that captured Pegasus Bridge, and the cafe nearby has lots of pictures of him and the other vets.

The Battle of Britain has every British actor you can think of. Forget the innacuracies and enjoy the action and the score.

Patton is worth a watch.

Paths of Glory is a terrific WW1 story.

Can't think of any more at the moment.

PS. I have a soft spot for David Niven, so add to the list The Way Ahead, The First of The Few and A Matter of Life and Death. ( Not a war film as such, but just brilliant).

THere's also a really gritty film about a military prison, called The Hill.

Having slept on it for 24 hours after watching the film "Downfall".

I think now ,

it should be part of the national curriculum.

What a place Berlin must have been .

The Allies had bombed it to bits .

The people where living like rats whilst Hitler and his cronies lived underground.

People were being hanged in the streets if they were political.

The Russians were knocking on the door and the allies were coming in the back garden.

The arrogance of the German Army officers/Arristocricy who would not surrender and capitulated and shot them selves.

The mind numbing action of the Goerbles who killed thier children before comitting suicide.

It makes you think deeper in that arnt we lucky we had someone like Churchill in charge and what a greater person he was to have kept his resolve and delt with all of it in his stride.

Well i watched it again and funny enough its was the same outcome.

one thing that did stick out this time was that the final defence of Berlin was demonstrated to be the responsibility of the

Hitler Youth that would be Hitlers own Scout organisation.which makes you think was that the plan when they were created.

Not really.The Hitler Youth more or less consumed every other youth organisation in Germany from 1933/4 onwards. It was all part of the nazification of German society and in particular the militarisation of German youth. A 14/15 year old Hitler Youth in 1936/7 was a young soldier by the time the war started who had never known anything but nazism. A similar young man in 1945 was in a similar position,he had never known anything different. Grermany never planned to sacrifice these boys in the defence of the Fatherland,but they were there,willing and ready.

I think that everything that Adolf did was all part of the Master Plan.

In this country I think we are very fortunate that he didnt get this far.

But the film is a chilling reminder of those events that make for riviting viewing and thought provocking after thoughts.

For a foriegn film with subtitles it was a brilliant and quality viewing experience.

And yes still my favourite, Das Boat a close 2nd.
