Paid project to create model motorised platform 6" in size

    Hi Guys

I am looking to see if I could find someone to make a piece of model style equipment. The purpose of the equipment is to create a platform which is circa 6” max in diameter which moves in predetermined amount, automatically in two axes.

On the platform I plan to display a loose diamond. The movement of the platform will then help show off the scintillation and fire in the diamond as it moves through the light. I plan to video the result with my video camera to help show the beauty of diamonds.

I have searched on the internet and I have found a device which has the movements which I am looking to re-create (although it is a lot more sophisticated and expensive than I need). Here is the link – just scroll down toward the bottom of the page to show the video of the diamonds moving.

    LightBox

If you are interested in taking on such a product to build the devcie or if you have any questions please let me know. I would look to pay for all materials, postage and of course for your time.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    Best Regards, Roger.

There could be many options, these depend on a single diamond or many. Lots of questions to ask, main one would be what would you like it to like when finished, I suggest a sketch of what you expect the end result to be and just how big you would want it. From this a design could be built.

    Cheers

        Hello John,

I was thinking that the device would consist of a flat platform with some v shape holes where the diamonds would rest so that they rested nice and flat. It would need to have spaces for maybe 1, 2, or even 3 stones so I could compare them side by side.

Underneath the platform I was thinking that there would be some control rods and some cams which would translate the motion from the motor into the backwards and forwards twisting movement for the platform.

Ideally I was thinking that the rods might have a stopper on each end which would be movable by me. I imagined a slider would move backwards and forwards on each rod, with the slider changing direction once it reached the each stopper. This would allow me to manually setup and adjust the degree of tilt on each axes (different stones might need a slightly different degree of movement).

Finally I was hoping for a simple speed control for the motor so that I could tweak the speed of movement depending upon the video I was making.

The controls only need to be pretty basic, I don't need anything computer controlled or anything like that. I just want to place the diamonds on the platform, test that the movement of the platform correctly shows the diamonds off properly and then shoot a short video to capture the results.

The only other point is that ideally it would be good if the unit was fairly quiet, so the noise of operate didn't feature on the video, although I could always mute the camera if this couldn't be done simply.

I have tried to show a quick sketch as per the request to show the layout although I'm not sure if this contains enough info to be useful.

The device itself doesn't need to be especially pretty although the platform on the top does need to look very clean and neat so it doesn't distract from the video I will be shooting.

Does this help to explain what I am looking for? If there is any points of clarification please let mek know. I'm hoping that this will sound an interesting project to someone as it would be very useful device for me to help produce really nice videos.

        Cheers, Roger

p.s. I could send the person who takes on the project some sample CZs which look very simliar to diamonds but only cost a few pence so you would have some real examples of what I am looking to hold and move.

Could you not use a display turntable that has a short tube cut at an angle with a new top. Being slightly off plane and maybe off center from the turntable it would make it wobble as it turns. Cover the top with a soft pile fabric to settle and show off the stones...

          Might work.

            Hi Ian,

I have just tried your idea with a couple of paper plates and an angled tube. Provided the top platform is held in such a way that it keeps the platform located in position whilst still allowing it to tilt, then I think it seems to work as an concept.

So, the question is, would you be interested in developing this from a concept into a working device? I would happily pay for all materials and for your time.

I really am hoping that someone finds this an interesting project as it would be a really useful tool in helping the videos that I hope to create.

Look forward to hearing all ideas and comments.

            Best regards, Roger.

Easily done with 1 motor a fly wheel with a rod through it held in by a grubscrew for angle adjustment.
