lancaster tail section

Hello

Can you please look at the photo. I'm holidng a dry fitted section of the tail. As you can see it corresponds to the drawing no 70 on the instructions. I'm concerned with part C33. The next drawing is not clear but appears to show part C33 in the position I have it in my dry fit. It seems odd. Do you think it's right please and what's it's function please?

It's a mass balance for the rudder. That position looks about right from memory. I'll have a quick check and get back if not.

As steve correctly says aidan its a mass balance , a heavy weight (usually lead) more often attached to ailerons but in this case rudders , that helps to minimise flutter by putting the centre of gravity forward of the hinge line , it also reduces the force needed at the control column , tony

And elevators!

There are lots of different systems, not all involve the weights mounted externally on "arms" like this.

On a slight tangent many aircraft also had inertia weights on the bottom of the control column. The Hawker Typhoon had a 16lb weight for this. Pulling 61/2 g that's....errrr....heavy, equivalent to......errrr 104lb

Mike Crossley blamed this system on the Seafire for killing a lot of pilots attempting to bail out.

Aidan , have you glued it yet? if not and if its possible ,it might be safer to thread them through the slot after painting , theyre a bit fragile and all too easy to break off when masking the camo and general handling . if youve already glued them , be careful !LOL!! tony

I thought of that but they are too big for the slot! I'll have to be careful. I'm taking great care with this anyway. Thanks for the tip!

You can split the part down the middle and apply each balance separately later if you're worried about breaking them off

Thanks for the encouragement Ian - I must say that of all the kits I have made, this one is the most enjoyable. I think it's mostly because this new tooling is great. Everythig fits together so well. The wings, for example, when fitted, did not need any glue betwen the wings and the fuselage. The gap is so small that I think the primer will probably fill it.

I'm building the kit with undercarriage down and have decided to fit that after all the painting. Am also deciding on whether or not to fit all the clear plastic before or after I airbrush the main plane. But of course the big worry will be the airbrushing itself! Who said this was relaxing!!!

Nice work Aidan. I've got to say, this new Lanc' is looking rather nice.
