    modeling mags on tablets

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone has experience of tablet pc,s and magazines my missus has offered to buy me a cheap tablet from the T shop for Christmas to cut down on the amount of mags sitting around my house and they are cheaper via electronic d/load as I read dozens of mags a year .

Firstly, from experience, don't buy a cheap tablet ... Go for something like Samsung or Asus nexus range etc, its worth the extra knowing its a stable platform and has decent build quality.

As far as magazine apps and software, The only thing you really need to try to avoid is Google magazines ..... Or yet again all your personal preferences will be spread world wide and you'll be bombarded with ads and offers.

I've got a Nexus 7 and subscribed digitally to RCM&E (an RC Plane model mag) so I could read the mag on my regular visits to the docs and hospital.

However, I can only read the mag through online streaming (it doesn't actually download to the tablet), so with no wi-fi at either my doctors or the local hospital I can't access it.

Needless to say I won't be re-subscribing to the "digital edition".

Ensure that any "digital" mags you want can be downloaded and stored on your device, otherwise you're buggered when you leave your house (unless you have wi-fi where you're going).

Andy, the digital subscription allows you to download the magazine to your android tablet, it says so on their web site. The asterisks note android devices are included.
        • Download and keep every issue**

**Please note that digital downloads are only currently compatible with iPad, iPhone, Android and Kindle devices as well as PC computers.

that was my fear guys - the digital saving on the pc as most tablets are wifi only and as Andy says it wont work without a wifi connection to stream it

Nearly all digital subscriptions offer a download feature, just check before you commit.

As far as not having a WiFi connection when you're out and about ..... What I do is connect to the internet with my phone using Samsungs own feature ( but there are apps that so this for android) and then connect to the phone from my nexus 7 using WiFi

A little bit of research before you buy a tablet to see if you can get this working with your phone could probe fruitful.

There are also tablets that have 3g built in (the nexus 7 WiFi/3g for instance) and although they're a little more expensive as I said above they're better build quality, I killed two cheap 70 -100 quid tablets in a month, just using them normally, this nexus seems to be OK at the mo ( although I've probably tempted fate now)

I've just tried on both my Nexus 7 and my laptop, and the "download" app is only available for the iphone & ipad (expensive!!)

For Android and Windows it's "live streaming" only

I should complain Andy, their website states you can do it, they should be able to offer you the file via email is they have any morals.

False advertising ...... Major bug-bear of mine!

I got a second hand 1st generation ipad 64GB WiFi, you can get some bargains on these early ones on ebay. They wont run the newest apple operating system but all of the features I use are fine. There is an app called newsstand which allows you to purchase digital subscriptions through the App Store. I get all of my magazines through this, they download straight to the ipad so you have them everywhere. I'm saving nearly £100 a year over 4 magazines. I know there are some Apple haters around but their kit is easy to use.
