Models to build before you die - and why?

OK, I am building almost exclusively WW2 1/32 scale aircraft (though I do have one tank in my stash) but I have built, many moons ago, a lot of other subjects. What models have you built or want to build that you would say we should all build before we die and why?

    Here is my list:

1/ The Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire, Zero, Mustang and Corsair plus all forthcoming Tamiya 1/32 scale releases. Why?: Because these kits are 'the state of the art' and each one is the best of its subject in any scale, great engineering, fit and detail - not perfect but no kit is.

2/ The Airfix 1/72 Short Sunderland. Why? I remember when my grand-dad bought me this kit when I was a child. This is one beautiful aircraft with its white sides and underside and I loved the slate grey/green camo. Yes, I know Italiari have brought out a new tool version but for me if I wanted to build another Sunderland it would have to be the original - mind you if HK Models brought out a 1/32 version......I would just have to buy my own hanger......

3/ The Revell Golden Hind. Why? - Yes, as a child I did build a lot of sailing ships and this was my favourite. Perhaps because, being a small ship, it was a larger scale or perhaps because Sir Frances Drake was one of my boy-hood heroes. I still remember this kit fondly.

4/ The Revell HMS Victory. Why? - Well I have to include Nelson's flagship on my list..... I did prefer the Revell range of sailing ships to the Airfix range and I found the Revell Victory far superior to the Airfix one despite being unable to depict it will a full broadside of cannon sprouting from the sides.

5/ The Tamiya '88 Flak' 1/35. Why? - This model has just so many diorama possibilities and this was the centrepiece for my first and only diorama. I still have some figures in my 'spares box' from that diorama in which I also used a set of German machine gunners as part of a defensive position.

6/ The Tamiya King Tiger 1/35. Why? - To me this tank represents better than any German armour of WW2, overengineered slow and unreliable but with a massive gun and creating an awsome presence on the battlefield.

7/ A Chieftain Tank 1/35 - any manufacturer. Why? I drove one of these beast at Bovington when I was age 15. Not long and not far but it was an experience I will never forget and certainly cannot forget the rather 'laid back' driving position... I have built the old Tammy one in the past.

8/ The Hasegawa Ki84 Hayate 'Frank' 1/32. Why? Well it is not the best detailed kit I have built but it was one of the most enjoyable. I cannot pin down exactly why but it was just such a satisfying build.

9/ The Trumpeter Dauntless 1/32. Why? I built this as the USAAF Banshee version. A complex kit I just remember how the fuselage halves fitted together so perfectly and easily despite the mass of internal 'gubbins' sandwiched between them. There was just so much glued to each fuse half but it all interlocked and went together faultlessly. I was astonished at the fit with even the seams requiring only the briefest of rub downs to get a perfect join. The only fault I could find with the kit was the terrible decals, something the aftermarket can solve.

10/ the forthcoming Airfix 1/24 Typhoon. I built a lot of the 1/24 Airfix kits 'back in the day' and loved them, the Spitfire, bf109, Hurricane, Stuka, Mustang and FW190. This example looks like it will top them all, from what was on show at Telford. I will not be able to resist this one.

I have waiting in the wings (pun not intended) a 32 scale Me-262 (by trumpeter, one was made here earlier so I would be welcome to any suggestions or input -as regards to ballast vis a vis, how much and where to place it so that the model sits on it's nose gear properly).

My ultimate model would be a 1:1 scale Me-262. Doesn't have to have working engines or a flyable airframe, but I do have a copy of the Oct. 1945 edition of Aviation magazine, and I have all the dimensions (and could probably research whatever it is I don't know). Something to make the kid in me insanely jealous. More pipe dream than promise, but you never know...

Barry I haven't given it much thought as I think I have a few years left in me yet. I have a small stash and only build 1/32 WW2 aircraft as you know.

As I've said my stash is small by most peoples standards as I only have 9. I seem to have accumulated quite a few large models i.e Revells Ju88, He111 and He 219 UHU so space could be a bit of a problem when I get round to building them. As a result they keep being pushed to the back of the list. On the smaller side I have the new Revell tooling of the BF109G6, Revells Mk22/24 Spitfire which will be a challenge and a Trumpeter Bf109E-4/Trop. Keeping to the small side I also have Trumpeters' Me 262 A-2a, Revells Arado196 and finally Hasegawas' Fw190-A5. I'm still waiting for the Airacobra to arrive.

I think I find that as you buy more kits there are certain ones that will always get pushed to the back. But to answer you question I don't really have a set order to build them.

Very quick diversion. This is how I weight the Trumpeter Me 262. I've built two or three and even with all this weight it only just sits properly.

You need to fill BOTH sides of the wheel well! The pictures only show one.

Before I die I'd like to build a model that I'm 100% happy with.........it's not going to happen though

I don't have a preference when it comes to build kits I will build anything

But my one wish to build before I die is the battle of Kursk in 1943 and I would like to do it with every tank every tree and building historically correct

This was the larges tank battle in history and if I did it in 1/100 scale I think I could get it on a 7/4 foot table

My preference is for the old, old Monogram Land Rover kit. It's a very nice version! Is my wish...

Why: Mmmm....simply, I'm a LR collector, it must be on my collection!

                All of them. lol.

I would very much like to have the rumored tamiya mossie in 1/32. I would also like to do some more of their 1/32 spits and the bird cage..

Also in a mad fit i bought two 1/48 Lancaster. I would like to get those built as well...

Most informative. I was hoping that i could get away with something like this arrangement. I have some left over ammunition from a pellet gun, which looks like it would do the trick here. Thanks for the tip!

I think probably for most of us it is probably either a kit we yearned for as a youngster and could never afford or one that we would love to build again with modern materials and a lot more experience.

For me the former has already been mentioned the Tamiya 1/35th '88 Flak Gun, prefferably towed behind the half track. This was an awe inspiring kit when it came out but way beyond my pocket money by a long shot. Only the rich kids got thier hands on one of them!

The second category is probably most of the Airfix 1/24th fighters. I have a Spitfire and two 109's in the stash, which I would love to put together with the addition of around 35 years of added experience and modern materials. These kits when they came out redefined modelling for us all and set new standards. Now they look dated and poorly designed models however they still maintain that ability to make you gasp for nothing more than thier very size. They are wonderful kits and I hope I get them together before I'm in the box!!

I'd like to build the entire contents of my stash........................so I don't have to bequeth it for someone else to enjoy - it's mine! And that DC kits Class 303 EMU that has been stalled for the last 10 years.
On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.
Coming soon: Airfix 1/72 Phantom FGR2.

I've been working on a Revell 1/32 Hunter on and off for a couple of years. The Hunter has always been my all-time favourite looking 'plane and I want so much to get mine right. Everything I've done so far is good by my standards - I'd just love be able to finish it and get everything right.

Side track: Steve. you could of gotten more weight in those bays, by using smaller size shot. Way to much air between the big shoots.
