    Micheal Wittmann's Tiger - Normandy '44

    Folks

One of my next projects is to depict Wittmann's Tiger in 1/35 sacle. I have purchased the latest Dragon Ausf E model with Zimmerit. The problem that I have is that I do not want to depict his last ride 007, but his one that was used in the battle of Villier Bocage.

My dilema is as follows. I have purchased a set of decals from Peddinghaus and they show his mount in 44 as being 205, research on the web and in Panzers in Normandy show conflicting numbers. Panzers in Normandy show that his tank number for s SS Abteilung 101 as being 200 but other sites give different numbers again.

So, can I ask those of you out there to assist and let me know if you have any information or details of the tank number bfore his demise in 007.

    Many thanks

    Andy

Andy, this is a bit of a start in your quest for info.

On June 6th 1944, Wittmann was issued with a new late production Tiger (steel wheeled, no air filters, central head light, lowered copola ect.) Number 205.

On the 13th June in '205' his group of tanks stopped the allied advance at Villers Bocage. 205 was disabled by British anti tank fire during this engagement, but Wittmann and his crew escaped.

He received the famous Tiger 007 in early July, and met his death August 8th at Gaumesil, on the Caen / Cintheaux road. Along with his crew, he was buried next to his tank in an unmarked grave.

This is not me being a clever dicky, I read it a while ago on a very respected Tiger site on 'tinternet.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Ron

I'm sorry Ron but you're wrong.

The Tiger used at Villers wasn't actually Wittman's tank 205. He 'borrowed' a tank belonging to one of his troop (Unterscharfuhrer Kurt Sowa) - Tiger 222.

Andy, please read my BIG bocage Tiger build this will list all the changes and anything you need to know.

Thanks for putting me right Paul. No problem.....Sorry Andy for supplying duff info!

Just goes to show, don't always trust Tiger Tank sites (Or any other for that matter) on 'tinternet as being correct.

        Cheers,

        Ron

I have actually read somewhere that Wittmann did borrow a tank for this engagement which has subsequently led to confusion over numbering. You could keep it simple and go for 007, no one doubts that one!!

          All interesting stuff.
