Modelling Magazines

Hello, my name is Josh and I have been modelling for less than 12 months.

I enjoy modelling equally as much as I enjoy viewing other peoples work and techniques. Does anyone know of a third party magazine/eBook currently in circulation that accumulates models, reviews, techniques and tips? I know there are brand magazines about however they are naturally very bias around there own products and would love to read a more generalised publication.

I hope to start posting my own work within their next few weeks :-)

I reckon you'll have to look very hard for somewhere better than this forum for modelling stuff! We got loads of excellent modellers, with a wealth of good information and experience that they're more than willing to share.

Hi Josh and welcome to SMF. Interesting question, I haven't come across any, but saying that it isn't something I have really thought about, maybe others have more knowledge on the subject.

Welcome to the forum, Josh. There are several excellent modelling publications out there, they each have their own individual style and target audience. Assuming you live in the UK, you should be able to pick up any/most of these from WHSmiths or suchlike. In no particular order, and my own personal viewpoints (YMMV):-

Scale Aviation Modeller International (SAMI): Aircraft modelling only, packed with news, reviews (kits, aftermarket, decals, books) and build articles, less emphasis on actual reference material although it does usually include profiles and/or plans for one specific aircraft. Written in a friendly and informal style.

Airfix Model World (AMW): despite its name it's not actually published by Airfix, although there's obviously an affiliation. However there are usually only one or two Airfix article subjects, but the rest are from other manufacturers so much less partisan than you might imagine. High quality and covers all genres – planes, cars, armour, figures etc – with good reference material to back up the featured build subject. Some aftermarket and book reviews.

Tamiya Model Magazine International (TMMI): same comments apply as regards AMW – it's got Tamiya in the title but covers models from many manufacturers, and is fair and unbiased in its appraisal of such. Also multi-genre. Personally I find TMMI aspirational, full of superbly built and photographed models that I want to emulate, with perhaps less emphasis on techniques than some other mags.

Model Airplane International (MAI): by the same publishers as TMMI and a similar format, but aircraft only. There are often colour profiles of a main subject, but like TMMI the attraction is the superb builds. Step-by-step construction photos are a big part of the magazine.

There are several others too, those are just the ones that I tend to read because I can find them fairly easily here in Canada. Also all of the above are available as digital editions for iPad/iPhone etc so they can be downloaded and don't take up cabinet space in your model room.

ive never bothered with magazines, looked thro them all in wh smiths, as you do , bought maybe 3 in the last 7 years

rather spend my money on kits and paint :P

theres loads of forums on t'internet that give more tips and help than any magazine could

I subscribe to Fine Scale Modeller, they do some nice articles on all sorts of detailing such as weather, airbrushing and enhanching your models.

Hi Josh,

depending what your interested in, there is Steel Masters, Verlinden publications, Osprey has some nice books there is X-treme modelling and Crowood has some nice modelling books.

i think its always nice to have something actual rather than virtual. fine scale modeller is a cracking little magazine for a quick fix. i must say though, some real cool tutorials on you tube and this forum is a modellers bible!

hi I am a model mag addict I read anything but tend to get military modelling/model military international and afv mag, they run from £4.99 to £6 for the afv mag with visually is very good . the problem is that you end up with loads of them which I use for reference my wife bought be a tablet which I will use to get the digital mag to save on space and money.

I always read the Airfix Model World. It has published two new publications on modelling for beginners and the second is for really advanced modellers. The one for beginners is this-

Scale Modelling Step-By-Step (Airfix Model World Special).

It is really helpful and I have referred to it many times. Anyway, welcome to the Forum Josh and I would like to see your postings.
