    Name Dropping

    Hi all

As i am new to this site i thought you might like to hear of a Test pilot who does like models,(the plastic ones). I used to be a member of an aviation society near to where i live. One meeting we were told that Jimmy Dell TSR-2 and Lightning test pilot was coming to give a talk. One member said it would be a good idea if we had a model of the TSR-2 so Jimmy could use it during the talk. He had one in 1/48 Vacform , i think it was a Formaplane model but can't remember. Anyway at the time i had just won the model comp in the society so i got the job of making it. Interesting kit. Scratch build ejection seats , undercarrige etc.On the night of the talk Jimmy nearly burst into tears when he saw the model. It took him a long time to start the talk and he kept on glancing over at the table on which it stood. At the end of his talk ,which was excellent, he wanted to know who had made it . We spent about an hour just chatting about flying and models .I had with me a copy of the Ian Allan book Lightning which i asked jimmy to sign .He did so and then he gave me a print about 15 x 12 of the TSR-2 in flight with him at the controls .He signed this for me as well . The model went to the person who gave it to me to build. I think Jimmy should have had it but there you go.

Several months later , George aird (Lightning and tractor crash photo, very famous picture)came to talk to us. No models this time but i did get him to sign the Lightning book as well.

I still have the book and won,t part with it

I just thought i would share that with you

      Pogo,

Firstly a very warm welcome to the Scale Models forum and thank you so very much for sharing such an interesting story with us for your first posting.

I hope that you continue to spend time with us and share any other experiences that you may have had in the past. It is these real stories that make the forum such a warm and freindly place to be.

By the way, I agree, the model should have gone to the pilot. Can you begin to imagine what it would have meant to him?

Pogo, what a great story you have shared with us here, these little things just go to show how simple objects are made into something very special with the addition of a personal touch, you certainly have a double take there with your signed book, that was a fantastic picture of the Lightning coming down with the tractor driver in front looking on,a chance in a million happening with a camera at the ready as well ? together with everyone else here, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you on scale-models, and look forward to reading any more of your interesting experiences both with model building and aviation.

P.S-Do you know if that photograph is on the internet ? I would like to do a painting of it sometime.
