    GAMING PC...GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

My lad is 18 and so a policy matured that me and his Mum set up. He is at college doing his second year at ICT level 3. So he decided that he wanted to spend the money on a gaming pc. He assured us that he knew what he was doing and once the cheque had cleared he set about buying the bits he wanted.

All told the bill for this monster was: £1800, this machine, same spec, is just short of three grand if you get it built.o_O

    Specs:

    Gaming case: £50

    i7 Intel processor: £280

Graphics card: £230 (in a sale)

Mother board: £170 (in a sale)

    Power supply 1000W: £100

Memory: Quad core DDR3 32MB GSKILL memory £280.

Plus £100's more on Disc drives, Blue Ray drives, software etc.

As you can see this is no slouch and still not the top end that gaming machine can be!

So, part of the stuff came a few weeks ago and the rest in a large box yesterday. He told us he knew what he was doing. He didn't and got rather flustered.

I worked over 20 years ago in a computer house on Honeywell mainframes etc. Now we are talking a mainframe that cost a £1000000 and had memory of just 512k. We used tape drives, like the ones you see in old 60's sci-fi films. Winchester drives great big early disc drives. Floppy drives that were 5 1/4 inch, the good old 3.5 inch had only just started coming in. I had built 2 computers from scratch but many years ago and felt that my job was done, we know use a laptop. Also with my disability building and faffing is just so much hassle that I thought these days were behind me...I was wrong.

So I have spent 2 hours yesterday and 6 hours today fitting and faffing and cursing and crying and I have now left him installing windows etc. I am knackered.

    Si...very frazzled.

I know sod all about computers. I used to be pretty savvy in my day (yes, I do know of the 5.25" floppy) but as the years went by I found out that I cared less and less. I am more than happy to pay someone else to set up or build one of those things. I do models. That's my thing.

I've built loads of computers for me and friends, I used to enjoy doing it, my last PC was at the time the best that was available, quad core, 2x graphics cards, 64gb memory etc etc, cost me a fortune, it's now used as a small table in my sons bedroom, doesn't get turned on, found a better option, buy a PS3 for games and a Mac for computing

Sounds like you had fun :P They can be complex things to set up but the same with anything if you know what you're doing then its easy. I built up my new PC last year while I had some time off with a broken wrist. Made it a tad more difficult. First time I have used a SSD. Little expensive but makes a world of difference. Best thing about building your own is it's cheaper and you can then fix it when something goes wrong. Well hope it is all up and running now.

As a rule i dont play games no interest in it for me as my last laptop cost me £30 from a boot sale i runs vista and it does me fine ,as modeling is more addictive.

It is all up and running, windows uploaded okay. He has a 500gb HDD for operating system and applications, however he bought a 1TB for just gaming etc, using one as the slave etc, this has gone wrong as he bought one for a laptop...£70 wasted there. He was looking at sold state drives but they are too expensive at the moment.

                      I am the IT MAN!

Building your own PC, well yes been there sort of. No it's not for me. When I want a new car, I don't buy an engine, gearbox, wheels etc. I let someone else put it all together for me and generally there's no compatibility issues.

There's a joke here somewhere about boot and windows........................
