The best all round modeling magazines

I thought I would seek a bit of a chat about what people consider to be the best all round modelling mags.

I appreciate that there would seem to be well catered for in the field of AFV and aeroplanes,.

Myself I currently subscribe to Tamiya Mag, Airfix model world of which I am generally happy with as they have a variety of models. Over the years I have most of what is generally available and those that are no longer available.But I find after a while dedicated mags I end the subscription because they become samy.

And its always good to know what others do in this field in case they have something I don't even know existed.

hi Harry , I subscribe to scale military modeller international and I like it ,recently I have taken to electronic mags for some of the other ones such as AFV modeller as I have tried to reduce the paper work sitting around the house and it is working for me but I still like the paper so don't know what I will do in the future

I am not so into the hobby that I would bother with a magazine about it. This forum is enough for me!

since i got back into the hobby 7 years ago i have bought the grand total of 1 magazine........an Airfix one about a year ago when i needed something to read when i was waiting in hospital , ive often perused all the others in WH Smiths (as you do ) but i just cant warrent buying a magazine........if i want to pick up tips theres plenty of forums and youtube,.......if i want to buy stuff there ebay and the rest of t'internet

when you think a typical magazine is between 4 and 5 quid, that buys a few bottles of paint or other stuff....i know which is more useful to me

I'm with Steve and Paul.....I am probably peeing into the wind, but to me most mags. are an expensive waste of time.....I glean all I require from here, Google Images and 'tinternet in general.

The money saved buys me other things......and beer tokens!!!

That's my take on mags. but each to his, or her, own..

Maybe if I ever found myself on a paid commission to produce some kind of work for somebody, then perhaps at that time I would need to consider expanding my library. But for me, for now, modelling is more of a past time -which i have not put much time in at lately.

I must say that I whole hearted like to read the conventional magazine as apposed to the digital ones. I sincerely hope that in the time I have left that paper mags will still be there and not entirely replaced by the digital era. Even if the digital version is cheaper.

Magazines for me offer such a rich supply of info not just in yet another model but everything else that comes with them such as new products and keeps me up to date with the latest "stuff" what ever that may be.

I did at one time have 6 subscriptions going at one time which equates to say £360 /year .The only real problem is where to store them or give them away.

I think I would be lost without a mag to read and that is something I do read them from cover to cover .They are not just junk mail that comes through the letter box

I know what you mean harry , Ive found that some of the aircraft mags can become a bit repetetive in their choice of feature subjects , I only tend to buy them if theres something in there that interests me ,( Yes im the bloke in WH Smiths looking through the mag for ages before putting it back !!)The Airfix Model World mag is quite good as a variety of genres are catered for , I have bought this quite a few times. cheers tony

Airfix model world every month for me although it's full off advertising and there is a lot of improvements that could be made to make it more informative at the moment I've been looking for an alternative but nothing seems to be grabbing my attention at the moment .

I only buy one, "The Weathering Magazine". I like because has good ideas, and they don't explain exactly exactly the tips O_o but has a good photos where you can learn a lot if you are an observer person

Sometime when I am traveling to France I buy the "Steel Masters"....has interesting builds.

Sorry guys, my opinion is different...maybe the magazines are expensive but the internet is a waste of time for me! You can search a rusty Sherman, and be in front the PC hours...because you are "jumping" and looking different webs! Once you think: Oh my God! I have lost an hour for nothing

I must admit too, I like to read books!! Paper books!! I like his touch and smell

A good variety of answers .

I notice that market stalls are springing up here an there selling outdated mags.It seems that a mag has only to be a month old and its out of date. I generally buy one of each copy of the the shelves as it is normal to pay £2 for 3 copies. Bargain. These ones once read I pass on else the house would be a waste paper yard.

I still cant believe the bargains to be had on these market stalls as well as the mags they sell for peanuts any specials that come out as well.

That can be anything from collectors series cars,trains AFV, helicopters,planes etc .etc.

Computer mags £1 a copy .

I tend to blag the local hobby shops shop mags when there is a few to many in the pile. Have not paid for a mag in years.

As far as I know there are only now 2 mags that are all round modelling Airfix and Tamiya. I dont think I'm far out if I say most mags average about £4.20 a copy.

Of course there are a number of dedicated mags where the price can be as much as £6 per copy.

So in essence then there isn't really a lot of choice for an all round mag other than what would seem like about 10 online forums covering all round modelling.

Unless of course if you know different

I get all the modelling information I need from the internet, but there is something nice about holding and reading a good magazine still.
