Taking a look on the net...

    Hi friends!

These last days I have been taking a look at other forums. I'm not planning to go anywhere, but I must admit the curiosity kills me

Has been a funny thing... I see some of you posting out there, I found interesting modellers and his projects as well...

Some days ago, there was a chat (here) talking about this forum. I must admit, after my little trip, I found they, generally, more...distants, maybe? With a comments like (to an our member): It's a nice model!but we want to know how you do it, ONLY

The other funny side is...I discover every forum has his Land Rover "frekee", but they are more productive as me!! So I have many work to do yet

    Happy modelling

To be honest Polux, this forum is quite small in comparison to some other's - but that's why I like it as on here you feel as though other members are actually friends, rather than just people

    on the internet!

That's true Patrick! It's smaller, but this is our "strong" point, as you said!!

I agree with Patrick, as i did not real look hard to find a forum, and had read quite alot hear before i joined in,

we have some great models hear and it is friendly and maybe small but that what makes it a good place to be,

I would think maybe if to big some people would get lefted out or maybe just looked over, as it is i find it hard

to look and give comments on alot off things,

but the upmost for me is the friendship hear,

I agree , I joined three others before finding this one and I know a lot about forums as I am a member of many different types and I have found that you can always find out how friendly they are from reading the introduction threads , the other ones I checked had no welcomes apart from a moderator welcoming them and one case not even one of those.

Here though it was a different story and all are welcomed and criticism constructive , one poor bloke on a forum was completely lambasted for building a kit OOB with no add ons

No thanks this is my home and I'm happy

Ha-ha you think that's bad Alan! On another forum who shall remain nameless ( an incomplete chain? ) a guy was ripped by someone for describing their Sherman as an M-4 ....

apparently using a hyphen was a capital offense!

I loitered around this site and others before deciding on this one, the help, I noticed was great to newbies and seasoned modelers alike, with no one sidelined or pushed out because of a question or a glue bomb. That was one of the reasons I fell foul in regarding my over zealous comments-just a relaxed atmosphere and I forgot that it still is 'specific area' forum and not a media chat site. But despite this, there is a more un-stressed feeling regarding posting and in showing one's models. On other sites there is a closed off approach to sharing and for folk who make a mistake in items names, designs, building etc. Hence why I didn't bother. I have always said this, way before I joined this site, I have never counted myself a great modeler, okay at certain things but just doing it my way, however, the time I have spent on this site has provided me with a wealth of knowledge from all stages in the modelling fields that helped me grow and get better in my modelling.

So, thank you SMF for being here.

If this site considered itself "for professionals", then I could understand a more sterile approach to model making, picture taking/posting and commentaries.

And I personally am not being hired or paid for anything that I do or have done, so to me, this is for hobbyists. You build projects that suit your fancy and you take your time (or not) to get them done.

Patrick (dubster72) has it right when he says it feels like a smaller community, and thus, a friendlier one. There are no divas or prima donnas here...

I came to this forum because 2-3 years back I was starting to pick up the hobby again, and I was looking for advice or pictures of other work, at least as a starting point. I am a quiet, closed off sort, so the laid back atmosphere is perfect. I don't want to get bogged down with a lot of other modelling sites.

I also am a member of a couple of other fora for modellers. One that we all know, and there are actually quite a few of the guys from her that are there as well, so no need to shoot me.

The other is a forum in Denmark....nuff said.

I like this place. Its is friendly, open and welcoming-- I look at it more as a club than a forum.

What ever it is we do, we must be doing some thing right.

No need to shoot you Ian, just a slight flogging will suffice. Joking aside, you raise a good point regarding other sites, they serve as a place for modellers who are more serious about modelling, and wish to showcase and discuss in a more clinical and professional manner, I have seen these sites and I must admit I am in awe regarding most builds, outstanding workmanship. But these sort of sites are not best suited for the casual or novice/intermediate modeller, so while we have a plethora of top guys on this site the others can use this site to get some more skills under their belt and showcase without feeling nervous about it. So, SMF is an ideal learning site and as such serves as a spring board for maybe moving onto more specific sites.

Your observation of a club more than forum is spot on and as for doing something right, yes you are.
