    Samurai Model Builder!

OK, so it's not really about model building, but it sounded like a good title! It all started when I made a toy wooden samurai sword for the grandchild; I had to read up on the subject, and look at lots of swords, and then I found one could get a decent looking iaito (dull training sword, no missing fingers!) for a cheap price, and the desire had me so I ordered one from sword & armory dot com. I did not start out to do iaido, but it offers me a way to do low-impact exercise (I have density loss in one hip joint), and I got a present from my sister that made it affordable to buy the outfit, so I did.

Here I'm probably doing noto, returning the sword:

    End of basic cutting stroke:

This might be drawing the sword, I'm not sure:

I'm looking at youtube for how to do it; I've reviewed the video and see that I'm still making some basic mistakes, but I'm going to be practicing every Tuesday at 4pm, when my Hospice volunteer comes to visit. This regular exercise should extend the time a bit before I'm bedridden.

    Regards, John

With that hat, you look kind of like "the scottish samurai"!

Getting outside, fresh air, sunshine, maybe a nice breeze, all that is medicine in it's own right. And the samurai code should provide strength in adversity.

Looks good, I always wanted a katana myself, and maybe one day yet...

When you do, make sure you know the difference between the cheap decorators (the handles are only glued on, not to be swung about without danger of flying blades, though OK to look at!) and solid swords that are (relatively) "safe" to handle. To protect fingers, one must start with a iaito training sword (no cutting edge); they are available from low-priced functional (mine is low end entry level), to pricey objects of art, just as are the shinken (sharp swords). It's nice to see others modellers doing some form of martial arts, myself I have studied aikido, not for long though, I got to 5th kyu and my grading on YouTube. For the last 2 years ish, myself and family have studied taekwondo, we are all red stripe (2 away from deputy black). Other than my 2 jobs, that's the only exercise I get...and do o_O

If it keeps you going, like your wonderful modelling then it is all a bonus. Nice one John and with time I am sure your technique will improve as will your inner-self. Remember to breath properly when doing the exercises.

                        Hi John,

nice, exercise and practice is the way to go and doing that outside that's even better. But if you have the possibility to take 2 or 3 lessons on the basics and very important the breathing I would take them. I used to do allot of Martial arts like Wing Chun, Jeet Kun Do, and in the army a 15 years of Krav Maga, but after my health wasn't playing the game any more, I started to study Tai Chi. I have to say that it is a great way to relax but the most important aspect is the breathing and that is something you cant learn on you tube.

And I definitely like your outfit!!

Cheers and a good practice and fun to you John.

I had wanted to get some instruction, but there's none locally available; the interest is mainly youngsters, and all they want to learn is kung fu, etc. The nearest iaido is in our East Bay, much too far away as I'm not in good enough shape for long journeys. I'm stuck with youtube for the moment

I thought I'd post the link to the site I found that's all about the Japanese sword, all about the different ranges of quality and pricing (mainly sub $300USD). And all about the "El Cheapo" "Sword LIke Object" (SLO). Has safety warnings and "horror story" videos (like the one about our "Home Shopping Network" knife & sword show, where the salesman injured himself with the "SLO" product!
