    tamiya 1/350 ships

does any one have any experience with the tamiya 1/350 ships? eg. the Musashi

i have only just noticed these models in my model shop and they look amazing!not too bad a price either.

just wondering if anyone has any experience with these and what they are like to build, detail...etc

If you can find the thread sometime last year regarding the workshop competition that Nigel put on I posted a couple of pictures in which you can see my Tamiya Bismark.

For that size range they are unbeatable. Lovely fit, nice detail, usual Tamiya quality. There are also plenty of PE accessories available, look at White Ensign models, to get the detail up to whatever standard you want.

They are a lot better than anything else plastic I can think of but you do pay that bit more for them.

The Enterprise is about 70.00 but the Bismarck, Tirpitz, KGV, etc are around the 30-40 pounds mark.

                  i have just found a model of a 1/72 H.M.S Cossack

its amazing. what a great ship! does anyone know of a tamiya Cossack kit? and does anyone know who makes a large scale one? not quite 1/72 because that would be ruddy expencive, but bigger than 1/350

                    Richard,

That is actually a Deans Marine Cossack in 1/96th scale. If you look in my gallery you will see some shots of my model on the water.

It is a Fibre Glass hull with plasticard superstructure and white metal and resin details. Things like the funnels and boats are vac formed to keep it light. Hand rails are PE but the modeller in your link has added better railings and a bit more detail.

It can be made as a purely static model but most people make it into an RC kit.

Deans also make some smaller models if you fancy something a bit bigger but non of them are particularly cheap. The Cossack is about 275.00 pounds now but they do a WW1 destroyer which is a bit smaller.

One of my freinds has KGV by Tamiya and he sent off for a pe detail set which coves everything. He told me about a set for detaing aircraft cockpits at 1/350. I wouldn't tackle that for fear of going blind!!!

I once read a report about a guy who masked off seperate planks and painted them in slightly differrent shades of buff. Very very time consuming. A more realistic approach is using differrent shades of washes, applied in line with the planking and with a brush fine enough to stay within a plank width.

As the plank detail is in releaf this is a good opportunity to do a base wash, add differrent shades over it and then finish off with dry brushing in a darker shade. This will pick out the plank detail very nicely and seperate the tones of the washes.

ok, i have the white ensign detail set is about £30, as much as im paying for the ship itself!!! lol

i think i am prepaired to pay it though as i want this to be a long term project that will look stunning!

or...it is my birthday comming up so i could just ask for it (cant rely on getting the right set though) lol

they also do an "extra parts" for it as well which is a further £20, can anyone research into these two set a bit for me please as their website shows the same picture for both of them and my searches are comming up rubish.

                              thanks
