I like the contrast between the rusty relict and the clean grass, I think you can leave the gap. You could add flowers or sheets?

if you are thinking of figures,......how about a couple of beduin passing thro? (i think Masterbox do a set)..........or a couple of mechanics stopped working and having a brew?

This looks great Ian, love the salt shipping. A figure would look nice but how about leaving the gap, It kind of serves as a window of sorts.

What about something higher than the Sherman, that breaks this one level surface. A rusty antenna, a weathered sign or an old windmill....
