The only thing I could think of to do pre-shading with a brush would be to maybe thin the paint down to a wash and then apply multiple coats, making each patch smaller than the one before to fade it toward the outside. Again, I hope that makes sense, it's difficult to explain.

Makes perfect sense, thank you.The only thing I could think of to do pre-shading with a brush would be to maybe thin the paint down to a wash and then apply multiple coats, making each patch smaller than the one before to fade it toward the outside. Got the chipping and scratching done today, I did this in a two colour technique which is a first for me. I'm quite pleased with how it came out.

Just waiting for it to dry so I can add some rust patches and streaking.

I like it, but I am also curious about what it's going to look like with e.g. wash on top of it. The problem I feel I have when I do this technique, is that it ends up looking a bit "cartoony", with rounded edges. Maybe a solution to that would be dipping a larger sponge piece for the larger wear, and then a smaller sponge piece on top?Comment

Rusting and streaking today, again I'm fairly happy with the outcome for a first attempt. The rust is a little bright (it actually looks a lot brighter in the pics than it actually is) but I'm planning on giving it another matte coat which should tone it down.

I actually realised after taing these pics that I wasn't quite finished, I forgot to add the exhaust staining.
