Question for those in the know….did KV wheels have rubber tyres? It looks like they are bare steel, but I don’t want to highlight wear points and someone helpfully point out that they had rubber outers….

They had steel tyres, with a rubber section between the rim and the main body of the wheel. Basically the same design as the “steel” wheels for the German Panther, Tiger and Tiger II, who probably copied it from the Russians. I don’t think the rubber part is even visible from the outside.

Tim nice track work. As for using rubber on the road rollers looking at photos in Steven J Zaloga and Jim Kinnear book KV1 & 2 no. just steel .As Jakko has just mentioned there may well have been a rubber section , but from the photos is hard to see.

Cheers Rick. The tracks are really simple done this way, and Vallejo black brown is a great base for track metal. The colour has a slight purple base to it which matches pretty well to the track colours I noticed at Bovington. The 6B pencil is fantastic as well. Really easy to use and if you need it as a pigment, just rub it on 400 wet and dry. Far cheaper than pre packaged stuff. The secret is to use a soft lead like 6B, HB is a bit hard and can take off the paint!
As to the gnomes, I’ve already started prepping the next lot of lawnies…..

Sorry Jakko, but I see no way you could insert any type of rubber into or onto the KV series cast steel road wheels. Maybe on the late JS (IS) series, but not on the KV's. If you have any documentation for this on the KV series, Please post it here if Tim won't mind. Thanks............

I didn’t remember the whole story, and thereby misrepresented it As far as I can determine quickly, it was the early wheels that were constructed like I described:



Резиновое кольцо means “rubber ring”.

But those are not what’s in Tim’s kit. The wheels in that are entirely steel, yes.

Hi both. I think most of the wheels in mine are actually like that, original early wheels. Only the first set are all steel, probably to guard against fracture for the weight of the three barrels and the casemate.

Thanks Jakko, It does seem a bit strange and I didn't think they had the idea/technology for it. I can see these being used on the 1939-40 versions, but would think as the war broke out and progressed, all steel was the way to go and preserve raw materials such as rubber. My Su-152 kit has all steel wheels too. Thanks again for the info....

Not an original idea, though using more modern materials Allen. UK pre first war railway passenger coaches used “Mansell” wheels. They were steel rims on wooden centers. The wood inserts were supposed to give resilience and reduce rail hammer being transmitted to the occupants. This design seems to do something similar.
