That’s looking rather striking Steve

Well I was dreading this next bit, the large underwing decals. Not only do you have to navigate fitting the decal around a lower wing pod mounting you also have to match it up perfectly to some bits, I dont know what to call them, on the front leading edges.
So I made the decision to cut the decal at the points shown below and fit them as separate pieces
One side went on better that the other but all in all not a bad result. I would not have liked to mess these up.
They were not the best fitting decals and I have some minor overlap onto the fuzz sides, nothing major but I may end up painting over the bits of decal that encroach onto the fuzz sides. I just need to get some Micro Set onto the decals to get rid of the little wrinkles that you can see. The pictures were taken immediately after the decals were applied and they will flatten out. Also started on the Canard decals.
Thats it for now.

Very nicely done Sir 👏👏
I agree with Tony, cutting the decals was definitely the right way to go.

Well I am on day 4 of decals and still a load to go. Today I did some repair work to the fuzz. When I put the large underwing decals on in some places the decal encroached onto the fuzz wall where the wing joins the fuzz. I learned a lesson many moons ago not to try and cut and remove the fixed decal and that it was far less painfull just to paint over them where required. I also learned a painful lesson with my Red Arrow Hawk not to put masking tape onto a decal even if its been fixed and varnished over there is a danger of damaging the decal. So for this touch up I cut pieces of paper to the required shape and attached them only onto areas where there was no decal. A light spray and the job was done.
As you will noticed one of the other problematic decals was the large under belly decal that goes from the front near the air intake, over the front landing gear bay and then right down the center of the under belly. Not totally straight but good enough for me.
Got about another two decal sessions to go then I will get some Satin varnish on and start looking at the fixture and fittings
Cheers

Well I haven't gone to sleep on this one chaps but progress has been slow and monotonous. I have been applying the large number of various decals to the model. I have counted 230 which I have applied (see the ones ticked on the sheet)
I haven't shown the 28 decals that go on the weapons mounts and fuel tanks.
in addition I had a gap to repair between the instrument panel and dash.
This was a quick fix with glue and wedge.
Then I masked off the exhaust outlets and these were sprayed and fitted.
On the picture below you can see an area that I need to patch up where the blue vertical stabiliser decals did not join correctly.
This was done with paint, I had the right colour produced by Revell
I then had a disaster. I gave the model a coat of satin varnish to seal in the decals and it went on cloudy in places. I dont know if I didn't mix it correctly or if it went on a bit heavy in places. Anyway I let it dry and then used a cotton but soaked in thinners to remove as much of the bad patches as I could. I have now decided to go with a gloss finish and have put on one coat which seems to have restored the colour. I will apply several more coats, it wont be brilliant but hopefully will be acceptable.
Next up its undercarriage, canopy and under wing hardware. As regards the wing fuel tanks. Revell have the model fitted with two fuel tanks, one under each wing but most of the time Blackjack was displayed with a single tank mounted on the belly of the fuzz. I have decided to go with this option.
So this is where she is currently at.
Thanks for following.

Not my area of interest but this build certainly catches my eye and is looking superb.
I wonder if the cloudiness you experienced was due to high humidity when you sprayed/ brushed?👍 1Comment

Excellent progress and a great rescue steve. I remember when I made this kit and the number of stencils I had to apply - crazy and time consuming but worth it , as you said even the ordnance has dozens to apply. Cheers tony👍 1Comment

The number of stencils is mind boggling! Superb job Steve, from saving the build to correcting the decal. I think it looks better in the gloss. Which brand of varnish did you use?👍 1Comment
